Founded in 1961, Theatre Communications Group's mission is to strengthen, nurture, and promote the professional nonprofit theatre. TCG's membership includes over 750 theatres and affiliates and 10,000 individuals nationwide. Led by the core values of artistry, diversity, activism, and global citizenship, TCG offers networking, knowledge building, grantmaking, performing arts advocacy, capacity building, professional development, and conducts research to assess the field's changing needs. TCG strengthens the theatre ecology through the publication of American Theatre magazine and TCG Books, which publishes over 400 titles by 112 playwrights, including 17 Pulitzer-Prize winners. In 2005, TCG received the Tony Award for Excellence in Theatre in recognition of its impact on the national field.

As a publisher during a changing arts and media landscape, TCG is keeping arts journalism vital by engaging students, practitioners, and audiences by publishing American Theatre (AT) magazine, the only general circulation publication devoted to nonprofit theatre. The magazine has a combined print and online monthly readership of over 155,000. Through articles, podcasts, video series, and live events, AT serves the field by celebrating the creation, art, and design of theatre and by providing breaking news coverage, thought leadership, in-depth analysis on theatre issues.
