To operate public access cable television channels for residents of the City of Rochester, and to provide for citizen participation in and of the electronic medium operating in the local community. Accomplishments during the year included: 1. 205 members provide creative and financial support to Rochester Community TV. 2. 148 adult students participated in RCTV classes and workshops to learn media production skills. Topics included, beginning and intermediate video editing, studio-based production, basics of animation, intro to Adobe After Effects, acting and podcasting.(Continued on Sch O) 3. RCTV staff continued to produce several regular programs including Conversations with Creatives, which received its third bronze Telly award, and Ujaama Rising, which received its first Telly award and Hometown Media Award. Ujaama Rising is a ten episode series that showcases local minority-owned businesses and their support for the community4. RCTV purchased a new high definition switcher for the TV studio.5. RCTV coordinated a community-wide celebration of the bicentennial of the birth of Frederick Douglass. RCTV created a heritage trail with fourteen fiberglass statues of Douglass, located at places significant to his life in Rochester; and helped to promote concerts, lectures, events at local libraries and a video documentary. The Heritage Trail was launched at Hochstein Music School on July 19, 2018; many community leaders and elected officials attended. RCTV helped to publicize activities and events throughout the city by sending 45 newsletters to 200 community leaders. 700 people attended the capstone event for the project, held at Hochstein on Dec. 3, 2018. The event included music, remarks by Dr. David Blight, author of a new Douglass biography and remarks by Mayor Lovely Warren. 6. 8 Rochester youth participated in the Summer 2018 Youth Employment program, working as interns at RCTV. The students received stipends for their work. 7. In Partnership with Writers and Books, RCTV staff hosted two summer day camp programs for about 30 youth, ages 9 to 16. The students produced short videos inspired by the Newbery Award or Honor books. 8. RCTV staff worked with two youth groups from In-Control and helped them to produce narrative stories, video PSAs and studio-based talk shows on youth health topics. 9. Ten Rochester youth participated in an after-school multi-media program called Infinite Radical Youth that combined TV, radio, online, streaming and social media delivery of a magazine-format program focused on teen interests, music and current events. 10. Students from School of the Arts created and performed a live radio drama, with help from RCTV staff. The program was aired on 100.9 WXIR. 11. RCTV staff and 50 volunteer producers create about 55 programs each year, and most programs are series; this amounts to about 1,500 hours of original programming each year.12. RCTV sent out 15 electronic newsletters to update 1500 members, supporters and volunteers about new classes and workshops, new programs, and new RCTV projects. 13. On Dec. 11, 2018, RCTV hosted an annual meeting for the community; and presented awards to our collaborators, including a youth program, and eight adult program producers and local leaders. 14. RCTV supports an LPFM station to serve the community of Rochester. The station broadcasts on the frequency of 100.9 FM and offers diverse programming, engaging youth and adults. 75 volunteer DJs and radio personalities regularly produce programs for WXIR. The station broadcasts diverse urban global music genres. Talk shows include financial topics, LGBTQ issues, empowerment and motivational subjects, marriage and family relationships and more. 15. RCTV Commissioned the creation of two radio programs for 100.9 WXIR: 13 episodes of the weekly magazine-style news program Reclaiming the Narrative were produced; and 14 segments of Our Earnest Struggle, focusing on the times and legacy of Frederick Douglass were produced.16. RCTV partnered in hosting the 90 Second Newbery Film Festival on March 17, 2019, at the Rochester Museum and Science Center. The event, which drew about 350 attendees, featured children's author James Kennedy, and youth-made films about award winning children's books. Several local teams were featured. 17. RCTV hosted the Black Music Month Celebration on June 15th; the event was held at MLK Park and featured music, dance and spoken word performances; some were broadcast on 100.9 WXIR. RCTV also awarded its Black Achievement Music Award to Paul Boutte for his musical excellence and community contributions.18. To engage new members and additional students for our classes, RCTV designed and sponsored two large billboards and screen ads to run at a local movie theatre. 19. RCTV collaborated with Wall Therapy to install a mural on the exterior southern wall of the RCTV building.
