Mission

To use sustainable design and materials to construct self-sufficient schools that promote education, employment, and environmental stewardship.

About

In 2018, Long Way Homes primary focus was on improving the education provided by our flagship school in San Juan Comalapa, Guatemala, the Centro Educativo Tecnico Chixot CETC. To this end, our curriculum development team adapted the state mandated rote memorization based 8th-grade curriculum into an original democratic education model. We also added the 10th grade on our way to offering PreK - 12th grade. In October, 2018, our middle and high school students and teachers led the implementation of 36 smoke-efficient stoves in the nearby impoverished village of Xiquin Sanaii. Not only did our team improve the lives of 36 families, but our students learned how to critically think through obstacles as a team to achieve a common goal. In addition to the projects executed in Xiquin, our students also built a retaining wall, a compost latrine, and a ferro cement water tank, all for families in desperate need in Comalapa. 27 Guatemalans received full-time employment in order to operationalize our program services.
