Mission

At Stair we know that students in our community are struggling with literacy. Through one-on-one afterschool tutoring, we empower students with the tools to read better and dream bigger, because every child deserves to be reading on grade level.

About

The Stair program assists second grade students enrolled in Birmingham City Schools to improve their reading skills. Stair is an after school program using around 460 volunteer tutors, who teach one-on-one reading lessons to at-risk children. Children are chosen by their teachers in the current tax year. There were 14 sites throughout Birmingham that served 231 students. Students met tutors twice per week for two hours during September through April. Students are taught a variety of skills necessary to read at grade level. The effectiveness of the program is measured by the standardized test given by the school. Students who completed the Stair program consistently show an average rate of improvement over 103% in reading fluency.
