Mission

The mission of The Food Literacy Project is to inspire a new generation to build healthy relationships with food, farming, and the land. We envision a community with a just and sustainable food system that cultivates healthy citizens. By providing hands-on experience growing, cooking and eating fresh vegetables, Food Literacy Project helps youth and families empower themselves with knowledge and skills necessary to make a lifetime of healthy food choices. In a time of great concern about rising obesity rates, lack of access to fresh foods, as well as the cultural disconnection between people, food and the earth, Food Literacy Project engages youth and families through our comprehensive Field-to-Fork Program, which includes Farm-Based Education, Professional Development, Family and Community Engagement, and Youth Development. Through a partnership with our host location, Field Day Family Farm, participants have access to 8 acres of crops, greenhouses, farmers and an outdoor teaching kitchen. Youth and families explore healthful foods, experience the work of farming, and harvest, cook and eat vegetables fresh from the fields. Many participants are given their first opportunity to experience a working farm. Youth development opportunities such as our Youth Community Agriculture Program (YCAP) afford teen participants their first chance to grow as leaders through work experience, training and community engagement.
