First step initiative is a nonprofit dedicated to empowering women in lubumbashi, democratic republic of congo. we operate in an economy where it's typical for someone to earn 2 per day if they even have empowerment. we provide small grants to collectives of women with drive and dreams to enable them to start, improve or expand microbusinesses. the women we serve have no other access to capital. we also operate a sewing trade school in partnership with another nonprofit, congo children trust, at which we train women in sewing and basic business skills to give them a livelihood. by giving women the opportunities to earn better livings, they have hope for a better future, contribute valuable goods and services to their communities, and are able to take better care of their children.

- Micro-business grants program. we supported collectives of women with cash grants to start or expand micro-businesses. in 2017 we provided 18,150 in grants to 28 women supporting 202 dependents. Expenses $18,150.
- Sewing trade schools program. we opened our second sewing trade school. six women graduated from our schools in 2017 and most are earning an additional 50 or more income for their families with their new sewing businesses. Expenses $5,800.
- We funded 3,500 toward the establishment of a hairdresser training program. we will train young impoverished mothers, currently living on the streets, in a vocation that can improve their futures. this project was in its initial stage of development at 12.31.17. Expenses $3,500.
