HIGH-ACHIEVING STUDENTS NEED A SPECIALIZED LEARNING ENVIRONMENT. HIGH-ACHIEVING STUDENTS (WITH THEIR OWN DISTINCT COMBINATION OF CURIOSITY, ABILITY AND WORK ETHIC) ARE EAGER TO MOVE QUICKLY TO ADVANCED LEVELS OF UNDERSTANDING AND TO APPLY WHAT THEY LEARN TO REAL PROBLEMS AND SITUATIONS. TO BE EFFECTIVE, EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS SHOULD ENGAGE STUDENTS IN A FLEXIBLE COMBINATION OF ACCELERATION, ENRICHMENT, AND THE APPLICATION OF HIGHER LEVEL THINKING SKILLS. LEARNING OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM (LOTC) LEARNING OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM (LOTC) IS A HALLMARK OF THE UNIVERSITY SCHOOL EXPERIENCE. WE BELIEVE THE LOWCOUNTRY IS OUR CLASSROOM, AND STUDENTS IN EVERY GRADE SPEND ONE DAY PER WEEK AWAY FROM CAMPUS HAVING EXPERIENCES THAT CHALLENGE AND INSPIRE THEM. THIS ENTAILS OVER 30 FIELD TRIPS PER YEAR TO EXPERIENCE EVERYTHING FROM LIVE THEATRE TO LANDFILLS AND PLANTATIONS TO MUSEUMS. IN ADDITION, WE WELCOME MANY GUEST SPEAKERS AND PERFORMERS TO OUR CAMPUS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. WE ENJOY HEARING FROM ELECTED OFFICIALS AND CANDIDATES, AS WELL AS MEMBERS OF OUR COMMUNITY WITH UNIQUE STORIES TO SHARE, AND THE PERFORMANCES RANGE FROM SCIENCE-BASED ACTION TO DANCE. HERE ARE SOME REFLECTIONS FROM OUR LOTC PROGRAMS THIS PAST YEAR: LOTC REFLECTION: SPARTINA GRASS SEEDS TO SHORELINE THIS WAS AN EXCITING MIDDLE SCHOOL LOTC. THE SPARTINA IS A CRITICAL PART OF THE MARSH ECOSYSTEM. IT WAS A FUN, HOT DAY. I ENJOYED LEARNING MORE ABOUT WHERE WE LIVE SHARED BY 7TH GRADER LOTC REFLECTION: FORT JACKSON ARMY GRADUATION THE DRIVE WAS LONG AND WE HAD TO BEGIN AT AN EARLY HOUR BUT IT WAS AN INCREDIBLE EXPERIENCE IT WAS TRULY UNBELIEVABLE WATCHING ALL THE TROOPS RUN TO SEE THEIR FAMILIES AFTER TRAINING. WALKING THROUGH THE BARRACKS WAS A STRANGE EXPERIENCE TO KNOW THAT SOON NEW RECRUITS WOULD BE SLEEPING AND TRAINING THERE. I ENJOYED THE MUSEUM TOUR AND LEARNED THINGS I NEVER KNEW ABOUT THE ARMY. I THINK EATING IN THE MESS HALL WAS A BIT SCARY IT WAS SO QUIET OVERALL, JUST WOW WHAT AN EXPERIENCE THAT I WILL NEVER FORGET SHARED BY 7TH GRADER" LOTC REFLECTION: MUSC HEALTH SYMPOSIUM THE MUSC PERSONAL HEALTH SYMPOSIUM WAS EXTREMELY INFORMATIVE. THE PHYSICIANS HELPED EDUCATE US ON WHAT IS HEALTHY FOR OUR BODIES. IT WAS A NICE REMINDER THAT WE HAVE EACH YEAR ON HOW TO KEEP OUR BODIES HEALTHY. THEY INFORMED US ON THE IMPORTANCE OF SLEEP AND THE IMPORTANCE OF REGULAR CONSISTENT SLEEP. I LEARNED INFORMATION THAT I WAS NOT AWARE OF ABOUT HOW TO GET A GOOD NIGHTS SLEEP. I LOVE SLEEP SHARED BY 7TH GRADER" LOTC REFLECTION: VANDERBILT UNIVERSITY VANDERBILT WAS AMAZING THE OPPORTUNITIES THERE WERE SEEMINGLY ENDLESS. I ESPECIALLY LOVED THE WONDRY, A COMBINATION OF WONDER AND FOUNDRY, VANDERBILTS CENTER OF CREATIVITY AND TECHNOLOGY. THE PROJECTS THAT STUDENTS UNDERTOOK WERE VERY INSPIRING. SHARED BY 6TH GRADER" LOTC REFLECTION: SWEETWATER VALLEY FARM AT SWEETWATER VALLEY FARM, WE SAW HOW CHEESE WAS MADE. IT WAS SHOCKING HOW IT WAS ALMOST ALL MACHINES THAT MADE THE CHEESE. AT THE GIFT SHOP I GOT JAM FOR MRS. MA, I AM VERY EXCITED TO GIVE IT TO HER. SHARED BY 6TH GRADER" LOTC REFLECTION: THE LOST SEA ADVENTURE WE ENJOYED TOURING THE LARGEST UNDERGROUND LAKE IN THE UNITED STATES ON OUR MIDDLE SCHOOL TRIP. OUR TOUR GUIDES TOOK US THROUGH THE CAVERNS TELLING US THE RICH HISTORY THAT SURROUND IT. THE FISH LOCATED IN THE LAKE WERE A HUGE HIT WITH STUDENTS. SHARED BY 8TH GRADER" LOTC REFLECTION: DAVIDSON COLLEGE DAVIDSON IS A SMALL LIBERAL ARTS SCHOOL WHICH WE WERE FORTUNATE TO TOUR WITH A GUIDE. WE LEARNED THAT STEPHEN CURRY ATTENDED DAVIDSON AND PLAYED BASKETBALL AT DAVIDSON. I ALSO LEARNED THEY HAVE A STRICT HONOR CODE. SHARED BY 8TH GRADER" LOTC REFLECTION: THE PARTHENON I LIKED VISITING THE PARTHENON, BECAUSE IT REMINDED ME OF BEING IN GREECE. I ENJOYED TOURING IT WITH CHARLOTTE. I LEARNED HOW THEY MADE MUSIC IN THE DAYS BEFORE MODERN TECHNOLOGY BY SPLICING TAPES AND PUTTING TOGETHER A STRIP OF ALL THE PARTS THAT SOUNDED REALLY GOOD. NOW, OCEAN WAY IS EVEN PARTICIPATING IN SOME SOUND EFFECTS IN MODERN VIDEO GAMES, SUCH AS FORTNITE, WHICH I FOUND ESPECIALLY COOL. THEY ALSO TAKE PART IN RECORDING SOME SONGS BY TODAYS POPULAR ARTISTS. SHARED BY 7TH GRADER" LOTC REFLECTION: THE HINDU TEMPLE SRI GANESHA WAS VERY INSIGHTFUL TO ME. MY FAVORITE THING WAS SEEING THE CEREMONY OF GANESH GETTING A MILK BATH. OUR GUIDE EXPLAINED EVERYTHING VERY CLEARLY, I LEARNED THAT THEY BELIEVE GOD IS A BODILESS FORCE. SHARED BY 6TH GRADER" GRADE PROGRAMS INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL OUR INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL SERVES STUDENTS IN 3RD THROUGH 5TH GRADE WHO ARE CURIOUS AND EAGER TO LEARN. OUR INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL HAS A STUDENT-LED CURRICULUM, ENCOURAGING STUDENTS TO MOVE AHEAD AT THEIR OWN PACE. INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL STUDENTS ARE CHALLENGED TO LEARN TWO LANGUAGES, ENGAGE IN WEEKLY OFF CAMPUS EDUCATION EXPERIENCES, PARTICIPATE IN DAILY P.E. AND LEARN TO BE LEADERS IN OUR COMMUNITY. OUR YOUNGEST STUDENTS BENEFIT SIGNIFICANTLY FROM BEING MENTORED BY OUR OLDER STUDENTS, AND OUR 5TH GRADERS ARE ALSO INCLUDED IN ADVISORY GROUPS THAT OFFER ONE-ON-ONE SUPPORT AND GUIDANCE FROM A FACULTY MEMBER THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. STUDENTS ROTATE THROUGH CLASSES THROUGHOUT THE DAY TO LEARN FROM TEACHERS WHO ARE TRAINED IN SPECIFIC SUBJECT AREAS. ACADEMIC HIGHLIGHTS HUMANITIES OUR 3RD THROUGH 5TH GRADERS LEARN ABOUT ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS, WORLD GEOGRAPHY, AND US HISTORY ON A THREE-YEAR CYCLE THROUGH THE EXPLORATION OF LITERATURE, PROJECT-BASED LEARNING, AND ENGAGING CLASSROOM DISCUSSIONS. WHILE IN CLASS, STUDENTS CAN BE FOUND CONDUCTING RESEARCH, READING MATERIALS RELEVANT TO THE SUBJECT, OR PARTICIPATING IN CLASSROOM DISCOURSE; SOMETIMES ALL THREE AT ONCE LANGUAGES IN THE INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL, ALL STUDENTS LEARN BOTH MANDARIN AND SPANISH. OUR LANGUAGE CLASSES FOCUS ON SPEAKING, READING, AND WRITING THROUGH THE LENS OF CULTURE.
