FAMILIES AND MEDIA: THE CENTER COMPLETED PUBLICATION AND OUTREACH EFFORTS BASED ON RESEARCH PRODUCED BY AN INTERDISCIPLINARY GROUP OF SCHOLARS COMPRISING THE FAMILIES AND MEDIA CONSORTIUM FROM STANFORD UNIVERSITY, ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY, THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON, CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, RUTGERS UNIVERSITY AND NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY, INCLUDING AN EVENING OF PANEL DISCUSSIONS AROUND "CHILDREN AND FAMILIES IN THE DIGITAL AGE: LEARNING TOGETHER IN A MEDIA SATURATED CULTURE," A BOOK PUBLISHED IN NOVEMBER 2017 WHICH CONTAINED THE RESULTS OF THE RESEARCH. THE CENTER LAUNCHED A NEW INITIATIVE, FAMILIES LEARNING ACROSS BOUNDARIES(FAMLAB)PROJECT, DESIGNED TO SPUR MULTI-SECTORAL COLLABORATIONS AMONG REGIONAL PARTNERS THROUGH A VARIETY OF ACTIVITIES, INCLUDING CONVENINGS, RESEARCH, AND A GRANT PROGRAM. IN NOVEMBER 2017, AN "INNOVATION LAB" WAS HOSTED IN COLLABORATION WITH STANDFORD UNIVERSITY THAT BROUGHT TOGETHER LOCAL LEADERS FROM AROUND THE COUNTRY TO DESIGN SOLUTIONS TO THE BRIDGING PROBLEMS IN THEIR COMMUNITIES. THE COONEY CENTER CONDUCTED TWO NATIONAL SURVEYS WITH PARENTS AND WITH TEACHERS TO EXPLORE HOW ADULTS CAN SUPPORT LEARNING ACROSS BOUNDARIES, WHICH WERE SHARED AT A PUBLIC EVENT AT STANFORD THAT PRECEDED THE INNOVATION LAB. IN MARCH 2018, THE CENTER ANNOUNCED THE FAMLAB SPARK GRANT PROGRAM FOR PROJECTS THAT IDENTIFY, SUPPORT, AND PROMOTE INNOVATIVE APPROACHES TO HELP CHILDREN AND YOUTH AGES 3-12 LEARN MORE DEEPLY ACROSS HOME, COMMUNITY, AND SCHOOL SETTINGS. IN JUNE 2018, FOUR PROJECTS WERE SELECTED AS RECIPIENTS OF $25,000 GRANTS FOR WORK THAT WILL BE COMPLETED BY AUGUST 2019. AS PART OF THE FREE TO BE PROJECT, THE CENTER PRESENTED FINDINGS FROM ITS SURVEY OF 10-THROUGH-13-YEAR-OLDS AT THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNICATION ASSOCIATIONS (ICA) ANNUAL CONFERENCE IN PRAGUE IN MAY 2018 WITH PARTNERS FROM HARVARD UNIVERSITYS CENTER FOR MEDIA AND CHILD HEALTH. THE CENTER ALSO COMPLETED ITS SUPPORT OF THE PRODUCTION OF THE APP FAIRY PODCAST IN COLLABORATION WITH MADISON PUBLIC LIBRARIES. THIS SERIES OF SEVEN IN-DEPTH MEET-THE-AUTHOR STYLE INTERVIEWS WITH LEADING CHILDRENS APP PRODUCERS PROVIDED INSIGHTS INTO THE APP MARKETPLACE FOR YOUNG CHILDREN.
