Raritan Headwaters is on a mission to protect water in our rivers, our streams and our homes. The 470-square-mile region provides drinking water to more than 1.8 million residents of 38 municipalities in Hunterdon, Morris, and Somerset Counties and beyond, into the state’s urban areas. We are the largest watershed organization in New Jersey with thousands of members, participants and volunteers. RHA protects, preserves, and improves water quality and other natural resources through our highly regarded science, education, and advocacy programs.

BIOLOGICAL,CHEMICAL AND BACTERIAL STREAM MONITORING WAS ACCOMPLISHED AT 71 SITES LOCATED IN THE RARITAN RIVER HEADWATERS REGION BY 120 CITIZEN SCIENTISTS. WATER QUALITY DATA WAS PRESENTED TO THE NJDEP, EPA, MUNICIPALITIES AND TO THE PUBLIC THROUGH PRESS RELEASES, A "DATA REVEAL" EVENT AND AN ONLINE REPORTCARD. RHA PUBLISHED A 25 YEAR SURFACE WATER TREND ANALYSIS AND LAUNCHED A "GET THE LEAD OUT" CAMPAIGN. THROUGH RHA'S WELL TEST PROGRAM, CITIZENS IN 40 COMMUNITIES TESTED THEIR DRINKING WATER FOR CONTAMINANTS - OVER 6,000 TESTS WERE CONDUCTED. RHA LED 1,700 VOLUNTEERS TO CLEAN UP 18 TONS OF TRASH AT OVER 50 STREAM SITES. RHA ENGAGED 2,200 CITIZENS, REPRESENTING 8,616 VOLUNTEER HOURS, IN HANDS-ON OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES INCLUDING VOLUNTEER WATER MONITORING, TREE PLANTING, TRAIL CLEARING, INVASIVE PLANT REMOVAL,ETC. EDUCATION PROGRAMS WERE PROVIDED TO 15,227 CHILDREN THRU FIELD TRIPS, SCHOOL PROGRAMS, FAMILY PROGRAMS, AND NATURE DAY CAMP. WE PROVIDED SCIENCE-BASED INFORMATION AND EXPERTISE TO 385 ELECTED OFFICIALS. HUNDREDS OF ACRES OF WILDLIFE HABITAT WERE ENHANCED AND IMPROVED WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF MORE THAN 600 STEWARDSHIP VOLUNTEERS. YEARROUND, RHA ADVOCATED FOR LEGISLATIVE POLICIES THAT PROTECT WATER RESOURCES AND CHALLENGED BAD POLICIES THAT UNDERMINED NEW JERSEY'S ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH. THE ASSOCIATION PARTNERS WITH SUSTAINABLE RARITAN RIVER INIATIVE, NJ HIGHLANDS COALITION, NJ WATER WORKS, LEAD IN DRINKING WATER TASK FORCE, NJ LEAGUE OF CONSERVATION VOTERS, ANJEC ENVIRONMENTAL SUMMIT, NJ WATERSHED COUNCIL, NJ LAND TRUST NETWORK, AND THE ALLIANCE FOR NJ ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION, AND OTHER CONSERVATION ORGANIZATIONS. RHA IS AN ACCREDITATED LAND TRUST. WE HOLD, MONITOR AND ENFORCE 33 CONSERVATION EASEMENTS, REPRESENTING 890 ACRES AND OWN AND MANAGE 10 PRESERVES AS OPEN SPACE FOR PUBLIC ACCESS INCLUDING FAIRVIEW FARM, A 170 ACRE WILDLIFE PRESERVE THAT OFFERS 5 MILES OF HIKING TRAILS, A BIRD & BUTTERFLY GARDEN, A SCIENCE AND EDUCATION CENTER, AND MODEL STEWARDSHIP PROJECTS.
