About this organization
Mission
The Miquon School treasures and celebrates childhood. We give our students time to play and grow. Our program and our environment encourage wonder, inquiry, independence, and discovery. We seek to create confident, life-long learners who will move out into the wider world with strong academic and social skills, intense personal interests, a love for the arts, and a commitment to building inclusive and peaceful communities. We are dedicated to learning together in the rich tradition of Progressive education that is our founders’ legacy.
About
HISTORY: THE MIQUON SCHOOL WAS FOUNDED IN 1932 BY TWO MOTHERS, DISILLUSIONED WITH THEIR OWN TRADITIONAL EDUCATIONS, WHO DISCOVERED THAT THE PROGRESSIVE EDUCATION MODEL CAPTURED BETTER THE CURIOSITY, ABILITIES, AND POTENTIAL FOR GROWTH WITHIN EACH CHILD. FROM ITS 'ONE-ROOM' BEGINNINGS IN THE OLD FARMHOUSE THAT NOW SERVES AS THE OFFICE BUILDING, THE SCHOOL GREW STEADILY. HOWEVER MIQUON INTENTIONALLY REMAINS A SMALL SCHOOL WITH AN ENROLLMENT OF 140-150 STUDENTS, WHICH HELPS TO FOSTER THE CLOSE RELATIONSHIPS THAT PROMOTE EFFECTIVE LEARNING AND TEACHING. ENVIRONMENT: LOCATED ON A 10-ACRE CAMPUS IN A WOODED VALLEY JUST ABOVE THE SCHUYLKILL RIVER IN WHITEMARSH TOWNSHIP, MIQUON'S LAND AND ITS POPULAR CREEK HAVE PLAYED AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN OUR EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE SINCE THE SCHOOL'S FOUNDING. WE TREASURE OUR UNIQUE ENVIRONMENT, AND AS PART OF A LESSON OR A SOURCE OF PLAYFUL REVELATION, NATURE WEAVES ITS WAY INTO EVERY CHILD'S EXPERIENCE.AFFILIATION: INDEPENDENT, NON-SECTARIANACCREDITATION: PENNSYLVANIA ASSOCIATION OF INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS (PAIS)MEMBERSHIPS: NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS (NAIS) AND ASSOCIATION OF DELAWARE VALLEY INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS (ADVIS)AGE RANGE: AGES 3-12, NURSERY THROUGH 6TH GRADESTUDENT ENROLLMENT (% STUDENTS OF COLOR): 149 (31%)TEACHING AND ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF: PRINCIPAL; 16 CLASSROOM TEACHERS; ART, MUSIC, SCIENCE, PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHERS; LIBRARIAN; COORDINATORS FOR CURRICULUM, LANGUAGE ARTS, AND MULTI-CULTURAL AFFAIRS; SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST; ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF; EXTENDED DAY STAFF; AND MAINTENANCE AND GROUNDS STAFF.GOVERNANCE: THE MIQUON SCHOOL IS A PENNSYLVANIA NON-PROFIT CORPORATION AND MAINTAINS 501(C)(3) STATUS.
