FUND ADMINISTRATIONTHE SCRANTON AREA COMMUNITY FOUNDATION (SAF) ADDED TWENTY-FOUR (24) NEW RESTRICTED FUNDS IN 2018. THESE FUNDS, STARTED BY DONOR GIFTS, INCLUDE 18 DONOR-ADVISED, 2 DONOR-DESIGNATED, 2 SCHOLARSHIP, 1 FIELD OF INTEREST, AND 1 AGENCY ENDOWMENT FUNDS. WITH THESE ADDITIONS, SAF NOW ADMINISTERS NEARLY 200 RESTRICTED FUNDS. IN 2018, SAF WAS ABLE TO GIVE OUT A TOTAL OF $1.3 MILLION IN GRANTS AND SCHOLARSHIPS FROM BOTH RESTRICTED AND UNRESTRICTED FUNDS. FURTHERMORE, SAF MANAGES TWO PRIVATE FOUNDATIONS, THE NEPA HEALTH CARE FOUNDATION AND THE ROBERT H. SPITZ FOUNDATION, WHOSE COMBINED ASSETS TOTAL APPROXIMATELY $31 MILLION.NEPA MOVESSAF SERVES AS A CATALYST AND A CONVENER TO BRING VARIOUS ORGANIZATIONS AND COMMUNITY LEADERS TOGETHER TO WORK TOWARDS SOLUTIONS ON THE CHALLENGES FACING OUR REGION. TO THIS END, NEPA MOVES, FORMALLY KNOWN AS THE NEPA EQUITABLE TRANSIT COUNCIL, WAS FORMED IN 2017 TO ADDRESS REGIONAL TRANSPORTATION CONCERNS. SAF PARTNERED WITH THE FEDERAL RESERVE BANK OF PHILADELPHIA TO DEVELOP THE COUNCIL IN ORDER TO DEVELOP AN EQUITABLE TRANSPORTATION STRATEGY TO ADDRESS CONCERNS, IMPROVE ACCESS, AND FOSTER GREATER OPPORTUNITY FOR ALL PEOPLE AND COMMUNITIES ACROSS THE SCRANTON-WILKES BARRE REGION. COMPRISED OF OVER 100 KEY REGIONAL STAKEHOLDERS THAT CONVENE QUARTERLY AS A COUNCIL AS WELL AS MORE FREQUENTLY AT THE SUBCOMMITTEE LEVEL, NEPA MOVES WORKS DILIGENTLY TO GAIN A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE SPECIFIC BARRIERS OF CURRENT TRANSIT SYSTEMS AND FOCUSES ON SOLVING THE TRANSPORTATION CHALLENGES THROUGH A STRATEGY THAT PROMOTES EQUITY AND ENCOURAGES ECONOMIC GROWTH IN NORTHEASTERN PENNSYLVANIA.COMMUNITY NEEDS FORUMSSAF HELD A SERIES OF COMMUNITY NEED FORUM SESSIONS ON JUNE 19TH AND 20TH. THESE FORUM SESSIONS FOR NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS WAS CONVENED TO INFORMALLY SURVEY NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS IN NEPA-TO SOLICIT THEIR INPUT AS VITAL PARTNERS AND STAKEHOLDERS IN OUR WORK THIRTY-SEVEN (37) LOCAL NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS MADE PRESENTATIONS WHICH WERE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. EACH PRESENTER HAD 8 - 10 MINUTES TO DISCUSS THE ORGANIZATION'S PRINCIPAL PROGRAMS/SERVICES, BARRIERS, AND CHALLENGES. FOLLOWING EACH PRESENTATION, FOUNDATION STAFF AND BOARD MEMBERS HAD A CHANCE TO COMMENT AND ASK FOLLOW-UP QUESTIONS. IN ALL, NEARLY SEVEN HOURS OF COMMENTS AND DISCUSSION WERE RECORDED. THE VIDEOS HAVE BEEN MADE PUBLIC AND THE "2018 COMMUNITY NEEDS FORUM REPORT" WAS RELEASED IN PRINT AND DIGITAL FORM FOR USE BY PHILANTHROPISTS, COMMUNITY PARTNERS, AND OTHER FOUNDATIONS. THIS REPORT HIGHLIGHTED THE REGION'S CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS, THE POPULATION NEEDS AND TRENDS, AND A LOOK FORWARD TO HOW THE FOUNDATION WILL ADDRESS THE CONCERNS OF THE ORGANIZATIONS IN THE FUTURE. CENTER FOR COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP AND NONPROFIT EXCELLENCESAF PROVIDES FUNDING TO HELP NONPROFITS MANAGE THE PROJECTS AND PROGRAMS THAT ENHANCE THE QUALITY OF LIFE IN NORTHEASTERN PA. IN 2012, SAF REALIZED THAT IN ADDITION TO PROVIDING FUNDING, THEY COULD HELP MAXIMIZE NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS' ABILITY TO MEET THEIR CRITICAL MISSIONS BY PROVIDING ACCESS TO PROGRAMS, TRAINING, AND RELATED TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE. TO THAT END, THE CENTER FOR COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP AND NONPROFIT EXCELLENCE WAS ESTABLISHED. BY INVESTING IN THE EDUCATION AND TRAINING OF NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS, AND THROUGH FORGING EFFECTIVE PARTNERSHIPS. SAF HELPS TO IMPROVE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THESE ORGANIZATIONS, THEREBY BROADENING AND DEEPENING THEIR IMPACT IN LACKAWANNA COUNTY. THROUGH SUPPORT FROM THE SAF AND PARTNERS SUCH AS THE MOSES TAYLOR FOUNDATION, THE CENTER FOR COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP AND NONPROFIT EXCELLENCE HAS THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXTEND ITS REACH FURTHER INTO OUR COMMUNITY. IN 2018, NINE TRAININGS WERE PROVIDED AND OVER 250 NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS IN THE REGION TOOK PART.WOMEN IN PHILANTHROPYTHE WOMEN IN PHILANTHROPY (WIP) INITIATIVE IS A PROJECT OF SAF. WIP IS A COLLECTIVE PHILANTHROPY MODEL THAT BRINGS TOGETHER COMMUNITY-MINDED INDIVIDUALS WORKING TOGETHER TO CREATE SYSTEMIC, SUSTAINABLE CHANGE IN THE LIVES OF DISADVANTAGED WOMEN AND CHILDREN IN THE LACKAWANNA COUNTY COMMUNITY. THERE ARE SEVERAL INITIATIVES THAT WIP FOCUSES ON, INCLUDING: STEAM (SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, ART, AND MATH) EDUCATION, HEALTH AND WELLNESS INITIATIVES, SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT, AND FINANCIAL WELL-BEING AND ECONOMIC EDUCATION. EACH INITIATIVE HAS HAD NOTEWORTHY ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN 2018: STEAM (SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, ART, AND MATH) EDUCATIONWIP ARRANGED MULTIPLE STEAM EDUCATION PROGRAMS THAT ASSISTED OVER 1,000 STUDENTS IN THREE LOCAL SCHOOL DISTRICTS. AT THE SCRANTON AND RIVERSIDE SCHOOL DISTRICTS, THE SEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS LEARNED FROM THE SALVADORI CENTER, A NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION BASED IN NEW YORK, THAT USES COLLABORATIVE, HANDS-ON, PROJECT-BASED LEARNING. IN ADDITION TO THIS IN-CLASSROOM PROGRAM, WIP ALSO PROVIDED STEAM-RELATED FIELD TRIPS TO THE SEVENTH GRADE GIRLS AT RIVERSIDE HIGH SCHOOL. AT SCRANTON SCHOOL DISTRICT, WIP PROVIDED AN AFTER-SCHOOL GIRLS STEAM CLUB FOR THE SIXTH, SEVENTH, AND EIGHTH GRADE GIRLS. FURTHERMORE, WIP PROVIDED IN-CLASSROOM AND FIELD TRIP STEAM PROGRAMS TO STUDENTS AT DUNMORE ELEMENTARY CENTER. LASTLY, WIP CREATED A SCHOLARSHIP ENTITLED STEAM STARS WHICH AWARDED FULL TUITION SUPPORT TO GIRLS SELECTED FOR LACKAWANNA COLLEGE'S LEVEL UP PROGRAM WHICH ENABLES HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO RECEIVE THEIR ASSOCIATES DEGREE BY THE TIME THEY GRADUATE HIGH SCHOOL.HEALTH AND WELLNESS INITIATIVESIN AN EFFORT TO SUPPORT THE DENTAL CARE CONCERNS OF WOMEN IN OUR REGION, WIP FORMED THE DENTAL COUNCIL. THIS COUNCIL IS MADE UP OF APPROXIMATELY 24 LEADERS INVOLVED IN THE MEDICAL AND DENTAL COMMUNITY, INCLUDING THE LOCAL DENTAL SOCIETY. THE DENTAL COUNCIL PLANNED A NUMBER OF PROJECTS FOCUSED ON EDUCATION, ADVOCACY, AND SUPPORT. IN PARTICULAR, A PILOT PROGRAM AIMED AT PROVIDING DENTAL CARE AND OTHER SUPPORT SERVICES WAS DEVELOPED WITH THE HOPES OF FINDING THE RIGHT PARTNERS TO BEGIN IN THE NEAR FUTURE. SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENTWIP, IN CONJUNCTION WITH COMMUNITY PARTNERS, OFFERED ASSISTANCE TO WOMEN WHO WERE INTERESTED IN STARTING OR GROWING THEIR BUSINESSES. FINANCIAL CONFIDENCE SEMINARS THAT FOCUS ON PREPARING WOMEN FOR SMALL BUSINESS OWNERSHIP WERE CONDUCTED FIVE TIMES THROUGHOUT THE YEAR TO OVER ONE HUNDRED WOMEN. THE WOMEN IN OUR PROGRAM WERE ALSO PAIRED WITH MENTORS TO HELP PROVIDE ONE-ON-ONE SUPPORT. MOST IMPORTANTLY, WE FACILITATED MICRO-LOANS TOTALING $115,000 TO THIRTEEN WOMEN IN ORDER TO SUPPORT THEIR EFFORTS TO START OR GROW A BUSINESS. FINANCIAL WELL-BEING AND ECONOMIC EDUCATIONAS PART OF THE FINANCIAL WELL-BEING AND ECONOMIC EDUCATION INITIATIVE, A MATCHED SAVING PROGRAM WAS LAUNCHED AND, SINCE THE INCEPTION OF THE MATCHED SAVING PROGRAM, OVER 60 LOW-INCOME WOMEN HAVE RECEIVED FINANCIAL EDUCATION CLASSES TAUGHT BY PROFESSIONALS IN DIVERSE FIELDS. MANY OF THESE INSTRUCTORS ARE ALSO ACTIVE SUPPORTERS OF WIP, MAKING THIS A UNIQUE INITIATIVE THAT ENGAGES WITH DONORS. THE PROGRAM HAS BEEN EXTREMELY SUCCESSFUL, WITH TESTIMONY FROM PARTICIPANTS REAFFIRMING HOW IT WAS LIFE-CHANGING. THROUGH THE PROGRAM, MANY WOMEN ALSO HAD FUNDING THAT THEY HAVE SAVED FOR HOUSING, EDUCATION, HEALTH CARE, OR TRANSPORTATION NEEDS, MATCHED DOLLAR FOR DOLLAR BY WIP.
