About this organization
Mission
Lauren Book, Lauren's Kids' founder and CEO, was a victim of childhood sexual abuse for six years at the hands of her female nanny. Armed with the knowledge that 95 percent of sexual abuse is preventable through education and awareness, Lauren has worked to turn her horrific personal experience into a vehicle to prevent childhood sexual abuse and help other survivors heal. An official 501(c)(3) since 2007, Lauren's Kids is based in South Florida and educates adults and children about sexual abuse prevention through in-school curricula, awareness campaigns and speaking engagements around the country and the world. The organization also leads an annual, statewide “Walk in My Shoes" awareness walk across the state of Florida – 1,500 miles from Key West to Tallahassee – and provides more than 7 million education and awareness materials statewide through direct mail every year. The foundation has helped advocate for the passage of nearly two dozen laws to support survivors and protect children from predators. The ultimate goal is to prevent sexual abuse through education and awareness, and to help survivors heal with guidance and support.

THE ORGANIZATION RECEIVES FUNDS TO EXTEND THE LESSONS FROM LAUREN'S KIDS "SAFER,SMARTER SCHOOLS" CURRICULUM MODULES INTO CURRICULUM MATERIALS FOR FLORIDA'S PUBLIC SCHOOL STUDENTS IN GRADES 1 THROUGH 3, WITH SUPPORTING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND TRAININGS FOR EDUCATORS. THE FUNDS WERE USED TO RESEARCH BEST PRACTICES, CONSULT WITH CAREER EDUCATORS, ADMINISTRATORS, MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS, AND DEVELOPMENTAL PSYCHOLOGISTS TO DEVELOP EDUCATIONALLY SOUND, RESEARCH-BASED MATERIALS ALIGNED TO FLORIDA STATE EDUCATION STANDARDS. FUNDS WERE ALSO USED TO PRODUCE MATERIALS INCLUDING DESIGN, PRINT MANAGEMENT, SCRIPTING AND VIDEO PRODUCTION FOR PRINTED MATERIALS FOR CHILDREN, PARENTS AND EDUCATORS, AND EDUCATIONAL IN-CLASS CURRICULUM VIDEOS. ONLINE TRAINING MODULES FOR EDUCATORS WERE ALSO DEVELOPED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE FLORIDA COUNCIL AGAINST SEXUAL VIOLENCE, AND THE WEBSITE SAFERSMARTERKIDS.ORG WAS DEVELOPED TO INFORM FLORIDA'S PUBLIC SCHOOL EDUCATORS AND PARENTS ABOUT THE CURRICULUM, AND PROVIDE INFORMATION ON HOW TO ORDER CURRICULUM KITS FREE OF CHARGE. CONTINUED EFFECTIVENESS TESTING OF THE PRE-KINDERGARTEN/KINDERGARTEN LEVEL OF THE SAFER, SMARTER KIDS CURRICULUM WAS ALSO COMPLETED, TO ENSURE FIDELITY OF EFFECTIVENESS INFORMATION PRESENTED.
