About
The Friends fully funded the Irish dance courses taught at the University of Montana [UM] in the spring and fall of 201. The Irish dance program continues to attract a large number of students. The dance is currently studying for full certification, which will enable her to organize and adjudicate dance competitions as well as qualify her to develop a recognized and accredited curriculum of courses in Irish dance. The Friends provided a substantial amount of funding to bring an Irish language and an Irish music instructor to campus for the spring of 2018. In addition, an Irish language and hurling coach instructor was substantially funded for the fall of 2018 and spring of 2019. The support for the instructors enabled the Irish Studies program to promote and offer a course in Irish Music and Song in the spring of 2018.The Friends also supported the Irish Language Study Abroad program in Ireland. Their support enabled less-well-off students to avail of this opportunity. This was the Study Abroad Irish Language immersion program in west Kerry, Ireland. There were 14 students enrolled for the course in 2018. The Friends also remained very active in promoting Irish culture in the community in other ways. In March of 2018, the group organized a St. Patricks Day celebration supported by over 300 people, drawing many from outlying areas such as Hamilton, Anaconda, Helena, Butte and Great Falls. The Friends also organized a week-long Irish language immersion course in Butte. A total of 23 students nationwide participated in the course. This is one of only two offered in the country and it is very popular among adult learners. The Friends provided financial support for the Montana Grizzlies Hurling club. This club was established on campus to introduce students to the ancient Irish game of hurling. Friends support enabled the hurling club to buy equipment for the students. The club was very enthusiastically supported and proved to be very successful. The team lost in the finals of the College National Hurling Championship in 2018. The Friends helped provide financial support to other various cultural groups, association, and societies involved in the preservation and promotion of Irish culture. The Friends provided funding to develop outreach to the high schools of Montana in the fall of 2018. The purpose of the visits was to distribute knowledge about the Irish Studies program at the University of Montana, and to encourage students to choose UM and Irish studies for their university education.
