About this organization
Mission
Blessings in a Backpack mobilizes communities, individuals and resources to provide food on the weekends for elementary school children across America who might otherwise go hungry
About
There are more than 13 million children in the United States at risk of hunger. The consequences of hunger include poor nutrition, a weakened immune system, increased hospitalization, lower IQ, shorter attention spans and lower academic achievment. Although children are fed during the school week via federal government programs, this assistance does not extend to the weekends. Thus, Blessings in a Backpack steps in to provide weekend nutrition to children in grades K-5 who qualify for the federal free or reduced meal program. For the year ended 6/30/19, approximately 87,300 students in approximately 1,092 schools nationwide were provided nutrional meals over the weekend. We have measured our program's impact and have found that children no longer suffer weekend hunger pangs, feel cared for by their communities, feel that their familes are being helped, have fewer behavioral issues at school, have better school attendance and find it easier to learn at school.
