To strengthen community and enable youth to leave behind a destructive lifestyle by tapping into their roots to express core traditional values of respect, honor, love, family, and community.
About
'Making a Change Program' provides ongoing support to at-risk youth and their families to facilitate internal change through healing contexts including weekly talking circles and regular inpi purification (sweat) ceremonies, as well as nontraditional leadership training. Most importantly, the organization offers a safe and healthy community context where youth can experience a sense of belonging. Practical skills training is also provided in areas of computer literacy and job skills for youth. Monthly community meetings between at-risk families and youth and institutional leaders are facilitated by La Plazita Institute. Together they identify challenges and solutions to issues including gang involvement, drug and alcohol abuse, poverty, discrimination, and institutional barriers to previously incarcerated youth and adults. The three groups providing these services are Sisters Making a Change (SMAC), Teens Making a Change (TMAC), and People Making a Change (PMAC).
