About

Operation Xcel serves students at two locations, in Stokesdale and in High Point. This past year 2016, we served 177 students. Most students come from low-income backgrounds and have various other factors in their life that have left them labeled as at-risk students. We are passionate about giving our students and families all the time, resources, support, and encouragement they need to have the same opportunity to attain their goals as any other student. We partner with local schools to identify students that could benefit from our program..Operation Xcel offers our services free to our families. As we continue to grow and provide our services to more students and families, we are seeking new partnerships to support our programming which includes the following:Operation Homework is an academic enrichment program emphasizing math, reading, and science enrichment, homework completion, test preparation, social skill building, and the establishment of effective study habits. Through partnerships with parents, students, and school personnel, we work to establish a successful plan for each student. Each day, students receive academic assistance with homework, specialized skill building determined by individual needs, hands on enrichment activities in science and math, and social skills/character development.Operation 3 Steps Ahead is a summer enrichment program offering academic rigor and enrichment in fun and exciting lessons that are relevant to real world situations. All children were assessed and placed in level appropriate reading, math and science classes. Certified teachers and specialists with specific expertise staffed classes. Students completed post assessments at the end of the summer to measure growth in reading and math. Students focused on academic work in the morning hours and then had extracurricular activities in the afternoons after lunch. Activities included science and math enrichment, educational field trips, arts and crafts, indoor and outdoor games, guest speakers and off site recreation such as swimming. Breakfast and lunch were provided.During the afterschool program 77% of the students met goals for growth in reading with 19% growing 2 years or more and 63% reading on grade level. In math, 88% grew two years or more and 52% were on grade level. Operation Xcel met the goals established for communicating with teachers and staff in feeder schools. At one school we participated on the leadership school. 92% of students reported self-efficacy in math and science and 76% reported they saw future value in STEM. Teachers reported that 93% of students improved in turning in homework and that accuracy of homework improved in 97% of our students. We partnered with more than 30 community partners and volunteers. For the 2016 summer program, we held an 8-week camp for elementary students and a 6 week camp for our middle school students. The results are as follows Math Assessment Summary: 88% of the students attending summer camp showed growth in math. The pretest average was 61%. The final average was 78%. The average growth was 32%.Science Assessment Summary: 85% of the students showed growth in science content. The pretest average was 47%. The final average was 74%. Some parents' comments follow. Positive staff, educational field trips and curriculum help to make this an exceptional camp!My daughter has enjoyed this camp. She made friends and her attitude has changed. She will be back next summer.Operation Xcel camp was well organized. All the staff were always very professional. My daughter loved the camp. I would recommend this camp to anyone looking for a great camp experience. I would say the team of Operation Xcel got it right."This program has taught my children to be responsible and respectful along with giving them new opportunities." Operation Xcel built relationships and attended community events regularly, arranged presentations and outreach at area schools, businesses, and local youth groups, and created marketing materials for distribution. Promoting Operation Xcel at parent nights, athletic events, PTA meetings and volunteer outreach events within participating schools provoked the attention of area companies, community organizations, and individuals. We held showcase events during the summer camp and for the end of the year. Local foundations toured and reviewed portfolios and projects. We will continue to increase staff trainings, and attendance at invaluable state-wide conferences such as SYNERGY. These activities have created a firm foundation for Operation Xcel to build upon, and increase our organizational capacity.
