Global Village Project is an innovative special purpose school for refugee girls and young women with interrupted schooling. Our mission is to develop a strong educational foundation for each student within a caring community using a strengths-based approach and intensive instruction in English language and literacy, academic subjects, and the arts.

About

THE GLOBAL VILLAGE PROJECT (GVP) WAS INCORPORATED IN 2009 AND OPERATES A SPECIAL PURPOSE MIDDLE SCHOOL FOR REFUGEE GIRLS AND YOUNG WOMEN AGED 11-18. THE SCHOOL'S INNOVATIVE PROGRAM IS DESIGNED TO EQUIP RECENTLY ARRIVED REFUGEE YOUNG WOMEN WITH THE ACADEMIC AND SOCIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS NEEDED FOR SUCCESSFUL STUDY IN HIGH SCHOOL AND BEYOND. GVP IS THE ONLY SCHOOL IN THE NATION DEDICATED TO SERVING REFUGEE GIRLS WITH GAPS IN THEIR FORMAL EDUCATION AND WITH LIMITED ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY AND LITERACY. THE SCHOOL ENROLLS APPROXIMATELY 40-45 STUDENTS EACH YEAR WHO PAY NO TUITION. LUNCH AT AGNES SCOTT COLLEGE AND TRANSPORTATION ARE PROVIDED FREE OF CHARGE. OVER 150 VOLUNTEERS SUPPORT THE ACADEMIC PROGRAM EACH WEEK. MOST STUDENTS WHO COMPLETE THE PROGRAM AT GVP ENTER PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOLS IN DEKALB COUNTY, GEORGIA. IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE ALL-DAY ACADEMIC PROGRAM, GVP OPERATES A MENTORING PROGRAM FOR GRADUATING STUDENTS. CURRENTLY, THERE ARE MORE THAN 90 GVP STUDENTS AND ALUMNAE PARTICIPATING IN THE MENTORING PROGRAM. NOW IN OUR 10TH YEAR, MORE THAN 65 MENTORS PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH AN ONGOING NETWORK OF SUPPORT, AS THEY MOVE ON TO COMPLETE THEIR EDUCATION AND PURSUE THEIR DREAMS FOR COLLEGE, CAREERS, AND GIVING BACK TO THEIR COMMUNITIES. TO DATE, GVP HAS HELPED MORE THAN 250 REFUGEE GIRLS ON THEIR EDUCATIONAL JOURNEYS HERE IN THE US. WE HAVE MORE THAN 75 ALUMNAE CURRENTLY ENROLLED IN LOCAL HIGH SCHOOLS AND 46 WHO HAVE ALREADY GRADUATED FROM HIGH SCHOOL. 35 OF THESE HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES ARE CURRENTLY ENROLLED IN COLLEGE. AS OF SPRING 2019, 4 GVP ALUMNAE HAVE GRADUATED FROM COLLEGE IN FY19, GLOBAL VILLAGE PROJECT LAUNCHED AN EXCITING NEW PROGRAM: THE ALUMNAE ADVISORY COUNCIL. THE PURPOSE OF THIS NEW COUNCIL IS TO BE INCLUSIVE OF AND RECOGNIZE ALUMNAE IN NEW WAYS AS LEADERS, ALLOWING MEMBERS OPPORTUNITIES FOR LEADERSHIP AND SERVICE IN GVP AND OUR WIDER COMMUNITY. WE SEE EXTRAORDINARY VALUE IN OUR ALUMNAE, THEIR EXPERIENCES, AND AREAS OF EXPERTISE; WE LOOK FORWARD TO CULTIVATING OPPORTUNITIES TO ENGAGE THE AAC, THEIR VISION, AND VOICES.
