About

FY2018 had a variety of programmatic activities, some of which continued or concluded pre-existing work and some of which were new endeavors. Sports for Development Initiative: This project concluded in December 2017. Capital for Good had provided funding to Football for Good (FFG) to deliver a fun, engaging, and meaningful sport experience to five community schools in Amuru district in northern Uganda: Bana Hill, Kali Kali, Kololo, Lakang, and St. Paul Acut Yika. The program ran over a period of approximately 20 weeks, reaching over 200 students (boys and girls) through ball mastery, skills competitions and small-sided games in order to develop their leadership skills, increase self-esteem and build character. At the end of the school year, FFG led a one-day football festival that had representatives from every community school: each school selected two teams of players, a junior squad (U12), and a senior squad (U14). The day included a "character development/teamwork" session, along with small-sided tournament play for the youth to show off the outcome of their training sessions. In total, the program impacted 908 children over the 20-week period, plus 20 teachers who were reached with training to lead similar sessions in the future. Liberia Education Program: This program transferred to Luminos Fund management in December 2017. Up to that point, funding from Capital for Good was leveraged with other donors to support the Liberia programs set up and early implementation. This included 80 "catch-up classes" for Ebola-affected children in Bomi and Montserrado counties, which benefited 2,000 students, enabling them to re-enter formal schools in September 2017. Funding also helped launch 60 "speed school" classrooms in September 2017 for the 2017-18 academic year. Luminos has reported that 2017 was a successful program year, largely due to active engagement with district/county education officers and with the students parents. Initial testing results indicate that the students are scoring well across four subjects measured: math, science, language arts, and social science. Luminos is eager to continue building a strong program, and Capital for Good is pleased to have been a part of its creation. Integrated Fund for Gulu: In FY2018 the Integrated Fund placed funding with Hiinga Uganda and Hive Colab to support planned projects such as follow-up to the August 2017 business plan competition. The rest of FY2018 activities were program closeout and final reporting as the Integrated Fund came to a close in September 2018. Since inception in 2014, the Integrated Fund placed over $350,000 in grants, loans, and contracts to support projects focused on the Gulu area. Final reporting indicates that the Gulu region as a whole has experienced significant growth and increased investment since it was selected as the Integrated Funds focus location in 2014, and is now seen as nearing an important tipping point for stability. Advocacy Initiative: Funding to the Advocacy Initiative ended on February 28, 2018. Activities for the remainder of the fiscal year focused on final reporting and closeout. Since inception in 2012, the Advocacy Initiative portfolio identified and partnered with 35 organizations-ranging from seasoned international organizations to small groups still seeking organizational registration. Over seven years, grants and contracts totaling more than $14 million developed high-impact projects to promote advocacy efforts for global health, and to ensure that partners implemented projects to their fullest capabilities. These projects included advocacy efforts in HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, family planning, and nutrition, as well as numerous multi-sector initiatives. Together, their collective voices and innovative work brought much-needed attention-and resources-to critical issues in the global health community. Geneva Global CSR: In October 2017, Geneva Global funded three CSR grants for Broad Street Hospitality (Philadelphia, PA) to pilot a prison-to-workforce collaborative for 80 beneficiaries; Helambu Community Development Organization (Nepal), to improve the livelihood of 575 residents of Sindhupalchowk region who were affected by the 2015 Nepal earthquake; and Manneka (Liberia) to help 3,000 students and their families, specifically by helping Ebola-affected communities in Dowein District reduce their vulnerability to preventable diseases while strengthening unity through shared activities and promoting education. Geneva Global provided $100,000 in funding with CFG in FY2018 for new FY2019 CSR grants, and these grants were placed in October 2018: Broad Street Hospitality (Philadelphia, PA), Nationalities Service Center (Philadelphia, PA), Visiting Nurses Association (Philadelphia, PA), and Saint John of God Hospitaller (Malawi). Northern Uganda Education Program: The FY2016 grant concluded in December 2017, having supported an accelerated learning program in Amuru district; this project leveraged another client's investment and CfGs funding benefited a total of 2,361 children, parents and teachers. In December 2017, a new FY2018 grant of $150,000 was made to this same accelerated learning program for the new academic year. The grant supported 30 Speed Schools, 30 early childhood development centers, 20 self-help group, and 11 link schools in Amuru district. Financing Alliance for Health: CFG continues to act as fiscal sponsor to Financing Alliance for Health, a project that aims to help governments design and fund ambitious, effective and affordable at scale health systems. In FY2018, FAfH recruited new staff and increased the projects geographic footprint from two to five countries: Liberia, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Malawi, and South Africa. FAfH developed a community health financing compendium collating available financing instruments and approaches, and completed three country case studies (Kenya, Ghana, and South Africa) to supprot insight and advocacy-and a white paper about the November 2017 financing workshop is nearly complete. Fundraising for operational support was active throughout FY2018, with numerous grant applications submitted. Girls First Fund: In late 2017, the Girls First Fund was launched as a project of CFG. Initial funding is provided by a donor collaborative of leading philanthropists, and activities are contracted to CFGs preferred partner Geneva Global. The purpose of the project is to champion community-led efforts so that all girls can live free from child marriage. FY2018 activities were centered around establishing the projects strategy, governance, fundraising, and operations. The Board committee has been established, and the project was publicly announced at the global meeting of Girls Not Brides in Kuala Lumpur in June 2018. The projects initial programming strategy has selected six countries-India, Nepal, Dominican Republic, Niger, Uganda, and the Democratic Repulic of Congo-to engage in a "learning year" of grantmaking. A call for proposals was opened in these six countries at the end of FY2018; applications will be received and reviewed, and grants will be placed, in FY2019.
