PRIMARY PREVENTION OF SPINA BIFIDA BIRTH DEFECTS - FOOD FORTIFICATION WITH FOLIC ACIDRAF WAS ASKED BY THE ETHIOPIA MINISTRY OF HEALTH TO "PRESENT A WORKABLE PLAN TO BRING FOLIC ACID FOOD FORTIFICATION TO ALL WOMEN OF ETHIOPIA." THE PREVENTION TEAM WAS FORMED WITH THE SPINA BIFIDA INSTITUTE OF EMORY UNIVERSITY, NUTRITION INTERNATIONAL, THE INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION FOR SPINA BIFIDA AND HYDROCEPHALUS AND THE FOOD FORTIFICATION INITIATIVE (CDC). IN APRIL, RAF PRESENTED THE SOLUTION OF "FORTIFICATION OF IODIZED SALT WITH FOLIC ACID" TO THE ETHIOPIAN GOVERNMENT AT THE TECHNICAL EXPERT CONFERENCE IN ADDIS WHICH WAS HELD IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE CLINICAL SERVICES DIRECTORATE OF THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH. THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH ACCEPTED THE SUBSEQUENT POLICY BRIEF MADE BY THE ETHIOPIAN PUBLIC HEALTH INSTITUTE ON MAY 15. THIS WAS IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWED BY A DIRECTIVE TO ALLOW VOLUNTARY FOLIC ACID FORTIFICATION OF WHEAT FLOUR IN ETHIOPIA. A GOOD SUMMATION OF THE CONFERENCE RESULTS IS THE EDITORIAL BY DR. AFEWORK OF TIGRAY PUBLISHED IN THE PROMINENT NE AFRICAN HEALTH SCIENCES JOURNAL ON APRIL23, IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE CONFERENCE: EAST AFR.J.HEALTH SCI.1(10):2019IN SEPTEMBER, RAF ISSUED A GRANT TO THE NUTRITION INTERNATIONAL AND THE ETHIOPIAN PUBLIC HEALTH INSTITUTE TO PROCEED WITH THE PRELIMINARY STUDIES NEEDED TO ASSESS SALT FORTIFICATION WITH FOLIC ACID AND ITS DURABILITY AND PATIENT ACCEPTANCE. RAF ESTIMATES THAT THIS WILL CUT OFF ONE YEAR WAITING BEFORE FUNDING OTHERWISE COULD BE REALIZED, AND THUS SAVE 44.000 PREGNANCIES FROM BEING AFFECTED WITH SBH.IN NOVEMBER, DURING THE SECOND RAF TEAM VISIT, THE PREVENTION TEAM MEMBERS MET WITH REPRESENTATIVES FROM ETHIOPIA'S GATES FOUNDATION OFFICE AND PRESENTED A FUNDING PROPOSAL FOR THE FEEDING STUDY THAT WILL PROVE THAT SALT FORTIFIED WITH FOLIC ACID WILL EFFECTIVELY PREVENT SPINA BIFIDA.THE TEAM ALSO MET WITH THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH AND RECEIVED STRONG ENDORSEMENT FOR THESE STUDIES.IN DECEMBER, THE PRESTIGIOUS JOURNAL SCIENCE PUBLISHED AN ARTICLE: BESET BY NEURAL TUBE DEFECTS, ETHIOPIA MAY FORTIFY SALT.
