Mission

Mission of Brooklyn Boatworks: Harnessing the unique craft of wooden boat building and maritime-centered exploration, we inspire young people to uncover the confidence, skills, and courage to chart pathways to their own success in and outside the classroom.

About

Brooklyn Boatworks led 12 boat builds, working with New York City students, ages 10 through 18. Over the course of the school year each class of students worked together to build a 7'6' optimist pram sailboat or dory using wood, a set of plans and hand tools. Students learned basic construction skills, applied measurement and estimation, local waterway geography, nautical chart reading, buoyancy, and the physics of sailing. Students also participated in four field trips throughout the school year and a celebratory student spirit boat launch & regatta in June. During the summer months Brooklyn Boatworks provided sailing education to alumni and young people new to the waterfront. The summer sailing program incorporated STEM lessons including multiple types of water testing, nautical knot tying, nautical flag making, boat rigging, sculling, and a variety of team building activities. Throughout the school year and summer Brooklyn Boatworks provided monthly activities for program graduates including employer visits, college visits, build opportunities, STEM-focused field trips, and paid internships.
