Mission

Project Life is a national movement to increase the potential pool of bone marrow and tissue donors by testing and registering college students with a simple cheek swab.

About

Project Life Movement has one overall program services model. Project Life Movement (PLM) saves lives and cures diseases such as leukemia, lymphoma and sickle cell anemia by growing the number of potential bone marrow donors on the national bone marrow registry. For many patients, a bone marrow transplant is their only treatment option and, in many cases, a bone marrow transplant can be a complete cure. 20,000 patients need transplants every year; less than half will find a match. The need is greater among minorities as they are significantly under-represented on the registry. Bottom line, there are not enough people on the registry and there is a devastating healthcare inequity for some groups.PLMs model is simple: we establish bone marrow drives on college campuses. PLM is becoming a national coalition of colleges that empowers student leaders to host drives and recruit their classmates to join the national registry. By focusing on college students, PLM targets optimal candidates for non-related bone marrow donation from both a medical perspective and from an eligibility perspective. With a simple, quick cheek swab, young, healthy donors register at the youngest age possible (18) and remain on the registry for years. Our model works because we make it simple and turnkey for the students. We travel to campus with marketing materials, swab kits and educational tools. Students bring their energy and recruit their classmates. We are highly-collaborative and empower students in their volunteer service programming. PLMs singular mission is to add more people to the national registry so that all patients, regardless of race, have a lifesaving bone marrow match. Our clinical partner, Be The Match, processes our cheek swabs, types the samples, and manages the bone marrow registry. We benefit by having access to more thorough and timely data and metrics analytics, educational materials, and a thought-partner in the development of an impactful minority-recruitment program to grow the number of diverse donors on the registry.Be The Match sought out Project Life Movement to partner to design a replicable campus model that adds more diverse donors to the registry. This join t pilot program involves seven targeted institutions located in the Carolinas. Project Life Movement was selected because of our demonstrated recruitment success through Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HUCUs). The pilot program features a strong educational component in order to inform diverse candidates of the dire need for minority registrants and the leadership skills needed to work with diverse campus affinity groups. There is an especially urgent need for diverse donors. For example, a mere 7% of donors on the registry are African Americans. So, Project Life Movement further focuses our efforts by partnering with HBCUs and affinity groups serving minorities. We invite all people to join the registry while strategically recruiting diverse students so that everyone, regardless of race, has access to a miracle match.
