Mission

POWER brings people of different faiths, economic and racial backgrounds, and communities to form new relationships and promote new policies that will better serve the common good and advance justice and equality.

About

Economic Dignity Campaign: POWER worked closely with city officials to implement and monitor a new policy that it successfully advocated for and that is aimed at helping thousands of outsourced, low-wage service workers to move out of poverty by setting a new family-sustaining wage standard on projects that involve public dollars. POWER was represented on the city's Wages & Benefits Committee which worked with firms seeking city contracts and subcontracts on plans to adhere to the new policy and thus help their employees reduce their reliance on public assistance such as Medicaid, SNAP and public housing. The number of firms seeking waivers from the new higher wage standard was cut in half in 2016 and approximately 3,000 area residents saw their earnings increase by an average of $2.00/hour. POWER launched a "Green Jobs Initiative" - a partnership with environmental organizations and PECO Energy to increase local sourcing of solar energy in such a way as to increase access to well-paying jobs in high poverty neighborhoods (e.g. solar panel installation) and create income-generating vehicles for low- and moderate-income homeowners (e.g. selling energy back to the grid via rooftop solar panels). In 2016, PECO Energy agreed to POWER and its allies' demands that it work with the community to craft a plan for moving towards 20% solar sourcing by 2025 with a plan for local job creation & hiring. In spring 2016, POWER convened hundreds of city residents, leaders, academics and service providers for a series of town hall meetings around the city that gathered and documented stories of people working full-time but living in poverty as well as practical, local policy solutions to poverty. This series culminated in the Poverty Summit held in April at the Community College of Philadelphia and which produced a 10-point anti-poverty plan that POWER is now working with members of Philadelphia City Council to implement. POWER and its allies also successfully urged the Comcast Corporation to commit to higher starting wages and greater access to its discounted internet program for low-income communities.
