About

A COMMUNITY-BASED ORGANIZATION THAT COORDINATES PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN, YOUTH AND FAMILIES RESIDING IN LIBERTY CITY. MCI WORK TAKES PLACE IN LIBERTY CITY IN MIAMI, FLORIDA. IT IS ONE OF THE POOREST AND MOST VIOLENT URBAN AREAS IN THE STATE OF FLORIDA. WE ARE COMMITTED TO CREATING A "CRADLE TO CAREER PIPELINE" FOR ALL OF OUR CHILDREN. 760 CHILDREN ARE BORN ANNUALLY IN LIBERTY CITY. THE QUESTION WE ASK OURSELVES DAILY IS "HOW DO WE ENSURE ALL OUR CHILDREN ARE READY FOR SCHOOL, READING AT GRADE LEVEL, SUCCEEDING IN SCHOOL, GRADUATING FROM HIGH SCHOOL AND ENTERING COLLEGE". WE ARE MODELLING A MAJOR PART OF OUR STRATEGY AFTER THE "HARLEM CHILDREN'S ZONE- AND WE HAVE STARTED IN A MANAGEABLE FOUR SQUARE BLOCK AREA. MCI HAVE ORGANIZED ITSELF USING "COLLECTIVE IMPACT" (STRIVE MODEL) AS AN ORGANIZING TOOL. MCI HAVE BEEN REMARKABLY SUCCESSFUL IN IMPLEMENTING OUR WORK IN THE 22 MONTHS UNDER NEW LEADERSHIP. MCI HAVE GATHERED A "COLLABORATIVE TABLE" THAT REPRESENTS ALL OF THE STAKEHOLDERS: CITY AND COUNTY GOVERNMENT, THE NON-PROFIT SECTOR, HEALTH AND MENTAL HEALTH PROVIDERS, SOCIAL SERVICES AGENCIES, RESIDENTS, TENANT ASSOCIATIONS, HOMEOWNERS AND BUSINESS, THE MEDIA, AND FOUNDATIONS/ FUNDERS. TOGETHER WE HAVE DEVELOPED A VISION OF LIBERTY CITY THAT WHEN FULFILLED, WILL CHANGE IT FOREVER. WE ARE LIVING THAT CHANGE. MCI HAVE DEVELOPED A BUSINESS PLAN WITH MILESTONES, OBJECTIVES, AND GOALS. AND WE HAVE BEGUN TO COLLECT DATA THAT WILL ENABLE US TO DEMONSTRATE RESULTS. OUR COMMUNICATION IS OPEN, DAILY, ON MANY LEVELS AND ACROSS SECTORS, AND IT IS FOR ALL. MCI PROVIDES KEY DIRECT SERVICES TO OUR CHILDREN AND FAMILIES (RESIDENTS), OTHERS SERVES ARE PROVIDED BY CREATING A NETWORK OF RESOURCES AND SUPPORT - ALL WORKING TOWARDS THE SAME COMMON GOALS FOR CHILDREN AND FAMILY IN LIBERTY CITY. OUR MOST EFFECTIVE WORK IS IN MOBILIZING RESIDENTS. WE INVOLVE RESIDENTS IN ALL WE DO. WE HELP RESIDENTS ORGANIZE AND DEMAND BETTER FOR THEIR CHILDREN. WE BRING PROVIDERS TOGETHER. MCI PURPOSE IS TO ENSURE THAT KIDS THROUGHOUT LIBERTY CITY DON'T FALL THROUGH THE CRACKS. WE DO SO BY HAVING A LASER FOCUS ON LIBERTY CITY'S YOUNGEST CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES AND THROUGH OUR BLOCK-BY-BLOCK STRATEGY. WE ARE HELPING UNPRECEDENTED COORDINATION TO TAKE PLACE. MCI IS SHARING DATA, OUR DIFFICULTIES, AND OUR SUCCESSES OVER THE LAST TWENTY MONTHS, MCI HAVE SEEN DEVELOPMENT OF A KABOOM PLAYGROUND, WHICH IS STATE OF THE ART, AN OUTDOOR UFIT GYM, AND INCREASED PROGRAMMING FOR CHILDREN AND ADULTS, INCLUDING THE CREATION OF A FREE LEGAL CLINIC. WE HAVE CREATED A COMMUNITY OASIS CENTER FOR CHILDREN, YOUTH AND FAMILIES WITHIN PUBLIC HOUSING HOMEWORK ASSISTANCE, PARENTING CLASSES, TUTORING, ARTS AND CRAFTS, AND REFERRALS FOR NEEDED SERVICES FOR CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES. ALL CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF FOUR RESIDING ON FOUR BLOCKS IN AN IMPACT ZONE ARE IN QUALITY CHILD CARE CENTERS; AND/OR ALL OF THE EARLY LEARNING CENTERS OR FAMILY CHILDCARE HOMES WHERE OUR CHILDREN RECEIVE SERVICES ARE ENROLLED IN EFFORTS TO IMPROVE AND LIFT THEIR QUALITY. PARENT LEADERSHIP CLASSES ARE QUICKLY FILLED. MCI HAS WORKED TO ENCOURAGE READING AND TO MAKE BOOKS AVAILABLE TO ALL OUR CHILDREN AND FAMILIES. WE ARE AS COMMITTED TO SEEING THAT ALL OUR CHILDREN ARE READING BY 3RD GRADE AS WE ARE TO SEEING THAT ALL OUR CHILDREN GRADUATE COLLEGE. AND OUR CHILDREN'S GRADES ARE IMPROVING.
