We Accomplish This Through Collaboration With Parents, Community, & Schools.We Envision A Prosperous North Minneapolis - Where All Children Of Color Are Healthy, Secure, & Academically Successful, Ultimately Realizing Their Unlimited Potential. NORTHSIDE ACHIEVEMENT ZONE (NAZ) WAS LAUNCHED IN 2008 WHEN A GROUP OF MULTI-SECTOR NORTHSIDE LEADERS AND NEIGHBORS - TIRED OF OUR FAILURE TO SEE LASTING COMMUNITY PROGRESS AND TRANSFORMATION - DECIDED ONCE AND FOR ALL TO WORK TOGETHER AS ONE SYSTEM OF SUPPORT FOR LOW-INCOME FAMILIES OF COLOR SO THEY COULD LIFT THEMSELVES OUT OF POVERTY AND PUT THEIR CHILDREN ON A PATH TO COLLEGE AND/OR CAREER.THE NAZ COLLABORATIVE SPENT YEARS BUILDING A MODEL OF WRAPAROUND SUPPORTS IN EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION, PARENTING EDUCATION, HOUSING, HEALTH, AND CAREER FOR THE NORTHSIDE FAMILIES WHO NEEDED IT MOST. IN 2011, WE RECEIVED A 5-YEAR $28 MILLION INVESTMENT FROM THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO SCALE UP OUR WORK AS A PROMISE NEIGHBORHOOD. TODAY, NAZ IS THE "BACKBONE" OF AN ECOSYSTEM OF 40+ SCHOOLS AND NONPROFIT PARTNERS THAT PROVIDE A CONTINUUM OF CRADLE-TO-CAREER WHOLE FAMILY SUPPORT FOR MORE THAN 1,000 FAMILIES AND 2,200 CHILDREN. NAZ SERVES THE COMMUNITY AS AN ENGINE OF HOPE, OPPORTUNITY, AND CHANGE IN THE TOUGHEST OF NEIGHBORHOODS, WORKING INTENTIONALLY TO MOVE MINNESOTA FROM WORST TO FIRST IN ERADICATING OPPORTUNITY GAPS. DEMOGRAPHICS: - 79% OF FAMILIES AND SCHOLARS ENROLLED ARE AFRICAN AMERICAN- 98% ARE PEOPLE OF COLOR- 73% HAVE HOUSEHOLD INCOMES OF LESS THAN $30,000- 13% HAVE HOUSEHOLD INCOMES BETWEEN $30,000-$49,999- 25% FACE HOMELESSNESS OR HIGH MOBILITYPROGRAMMING:NAZ WORKS IN COMMUNITY AND IN PARTNERSHIP THROUGH ITS COLLABORATIVE IN A CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT PROCESS. WITH EVERY NEW YEAR WE RECALIBRATE OUR STRATEGIES BASED ON FEEDBACK FROM COACHES, STAFF AND PARTNERS, RESULTS FROM PARTICIPANTS, AND VIA ASSESSMENT OF PROJECTED VERSUS ACTUAL SERVICE GOALS. WE SCALE AND REFINE STRATEGIES THAT ARE SUCCESSFUL AND DISCARD THOSE ARE NOT, USING OUR LEARNINGS TO INFORM NEW APPROACHES THAT MAY BE MORE EFFECTIVE.AS A RESPONSIVE ORGANIZATION WE ARE CONTINUOUSLY IMPROVING UPON THE DELIVERY OF SERVICE, BUT OUR VALUES BEHIND THOSE STRATEGIES REMAIN CONSISTENT. NAZ BELIEVES STRONGLY IN UTILIZING A HIGH-TOUCH PROCESS THAT BUILDS A CULTURE OF ACHIEVEMENT VIA A TWO-GENERATION FRAMEWORK:- NAZ WORKS IN AND WITH PREK-12 PARTNER SCHOOLS TO PROVIDE ACADEMIC COACHING AND DEVELOPMENTAL SUPPORTS TO OUR SCHOLARS DURING AND OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL FROM BIRTH ONWARD. - NAZ STABILIZES SCHOLAR HOME LIFE BY 1) COACHING PARENTS TO DEVELOP FAMILY ACHIEVEMENT PLANS AS MOTIVATION TO SUPPORT ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AND 2) WORKING WITH PARENTS TO ADDRESS HOUSING, CAREER, AND OTHER NEEDS. - NAZ WORKS COLLECTIVELY WITH COMMUNITY PARTNERS FOR GREATER IMPACT, INCLUDING ADDRESSING HISTORICAL AND RACIAL BIAS THROUGH A TRAUMA-INFORMED LENS.- NAZ PROVIDES THE STAFFING INFRASTRUCTURE FOR PARENT GOAL ATTAINMENT, MAINTAINS A SHARED DATABASE, AND LEADS THE COLLABORATIVE'S CONTINUOUS INNOVATION PROCESS AS AN EQUAL WITH OUR PARTNERS.IMPACT:EACH TIME FAMILIES SET AND ACHIEVE ACADEMIC GOALS WITH THEIR CHILDREN, SUCCEED IN SCHOOL OR WORK, AND STEP INTO LEADERSHIP POSITIONS FOR IMPROVED EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR THEIR SCHOLARS, WE KNOW THAT CHANGES IN BEHAVIOR ARE TAKING PLACE. THESE INCREMENTAL SHIFTS BRING US CLOSER TO OUR ULTIMATE GOAL OF NARROWING AND EVENTUALLY ELIMINATING THE GAPS IN EDUCATION,EMPLOYMENT, SAFETY, AND HOUSING, AMONG OTHERS, THAT DISPROPORTIONATELY IMPACT NORTH MINNEAPOLIS FAMILIES.IN GRADES 6-8, WE SEE A CONSISTENT, GRADUAL TREND UPWARDS. PROGRESS CONTINUES THROUGH THE SUPPORT OF THE NAZ LAYERED APPROACH. AS OF THE 2017-18 SCHOOL YEAR:- 48% OF NAZ SCHOLARS ASSESSED AS LIKELY TO BE KINDERGARTEN-READY AS DEFINED BY THE EARLY FAST ASSESSMENT COMPARED TO ONLY 31% OF SCHOLARS NOT ENROLLED IN A NAZ EARLY CHILDHOOD PARTNER PROGRAM.- 28% OF SCHOLARS IN NAZ ACADEMIC STRATEGIES WERE PROFICIENT IN READING IN GRADES 3-8 COMPARED TO ONLY 14% OF THE SCHOLARS WITH ONLY A NAZ COACH.- 29% OF SCHOLARS IN NAZ ACADEMIC STRATEGIES WERE PROFICIENT IN MATH IN GRADES 3-8 COMPARED TO ONLY 10% WHO ONLY HAD A NAZ COACH. ANNUALLY, NAZ SERVES 1,000 FAMILIES AND 2,200 SCHOLARS.
