Mission

To promote, guide and help to sustain a national network of free clinics emphasizing the use of retired medical and community volunteers within a culture of caring to improve access to health care for America's underserved and uninsured.

About

Volunteers in Medicine (VIM) is committed to developing a national network of sustainable free health care clinics for the underinsured and uninsured. In order to fulfill its mission to improve access to health care for America's underserved, VIM assists community organizing groups in establishing new clinics following a proven model. The national VIM office also provides programs and educational resources to the VIM Alliance, the network of VIM clinics it assisted in developing. In 2018, VIM opened one new clinic and provided one-on-one technical assistance for new clinic development to 42 communities in 17 states. VIM also piloted a VIM Alliance expansion project, working with a cohort of seven established clinics to determine their eligibility for the VIM Alliance. The network of 88 VIM Alliance clinics provided 349,000 health care visits to 87,000 patients. More than 10,000 medical and non-medical volunteers shared their time and expertise with VIM. Expert VIM national office staff provide individualized assistance to developing free clinics and established sites that wish to join the VIM Alliance. For both groups, the emphasis is on upholding the VIM Model. Developing sites receive guidance through each phase of the clinic development process, from the initial feasibility study through the opening of the clinic. Expansion sites that are aligned with the VIM Model receive assistance and educational resources to assist them in attaining VIM Alliance membership status. In accordance with its strategic priorities, the VIM national office enhanced the value of VIM Alliance membership by adding benefits in 2018. The VIM National Conference convened 80 participants, including clinic leaders, organizational partners and experts in the field with an average overall conference rating of 3.9 out of 4. VIM collaborated with partners to provide $180,000 in grants to VIM Alliance clinics, access to telehealth services for four VIM clinics, and scholarships for 30 VIM clinic representatives to attend the 2018 VIM National Conference. New partnerships made it possible for VIM Alliance members to generate revenue from vehicle donations, join the National Association of Free and Charitable Clinics at a reduced rate, and continue using the Practice Fusion electronic medical record system for free.
