Mission
Newport Bay Conservancy (NBC) bears a singular mission to protect and preserve the Upper Newport Bay and its watershed through education, restoration, research and advocacy. For 50 years NBC has relied on the steady effort and dedication of members and volunteers without whom none of our aspirations and accomplishments, indeed our entire vision for the well-being and sustainability of the Bay, would be possible. NBC continues to be the beneficiary of a strong tradition of volunteerism and a consistent history of community support.

EDUCATE 37,027 MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC ABOUT THE ECOLOGICAL IMPORTANCE OF THE BAY BY PROVIDING VOLUNTEER SUPPORT/STAFFING AT THE PETER AND MARY MUTH INTERPRETIVE CENTER EVERY DAY BUT MONDAYS. THE CONSERVANCY HOSTED FIELD TRIPS TEACHING PRE-K THROUGH 6TH GRADE (1,590) AND HIGH SCHOOL AS WELL AS SOME COLLEGE STUDENTS (1,130) STUDENTS THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR, SPONSORING SOME OF THE TRANSPORTATION COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH GETTING THE SCHOOLS TO/FROM THE BAY. THE CONSERVANCY TOOK OVER HOSTING "COMMUNITY DAY" AT THE BACK BAY SCIENCE CENTER EVERY SUNDAY FROM JULY TO DECEMBER, REACHING 1,190 MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC. NBC LED FREE PUBLIC WALKING TOURS AND GUIDED KAYAK TOURS INSPIRE ANOTHER 1,373 PEOPLE. HOSTED 9 SPECIAL EVENTS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR THAT CONNECTED ANOTHER 2,515 PEOPLE TO THE BAY. CONDUCTED 7 PUBLIC RESTORATION EVENTS, ENGAGING 216 ONE TIME VOLUNTEERS IN ORDER TO HELP REMOVE INVASIVE SPECIES OF PLANTS AND PLANT NATIVE PLANTS TO ENHANCE THE HABITAT OF THE BAY. HOSTED 1 SYMPOSIUM EDUCATING 89 PEOPLE ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF WETLANDS SPACES LIKE THE BAY. HOSTED MULTIPLE TRASH PICKUP DAYS IN THE BAY TO REMOVE EXCESS OF 10,000 POUNDS OF TRASH FROM THE WETLAND. THE CONSERVANCY TRAINED 50 PEOPLE TO BE REGULAR VOLUNTEERS AND HOSTED 27 "NATURALIST NIGHTS" WITH 485 TOTAL ATTENDEES, 15 OF WHOM GRADUATED THROUGH OUR NATURALIST PROGRAM. FINALLY, THE CONSERVANCY WENT TO 6 OUTREACH EVENTS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, CONNECTING WITH ANOTHER 6,522 PEOPLE. ALTOGETHER, OVER 50,000 PEOPLE WERE EDUCATED AND INSPIRED TO PROTECT AND PRESERVE OPEN SPACES LIKE THE UPPER NEWPORT BAY THROUGH 600 EVENTS AND OVER 12,000 VOLUNTEER HOURS.
