The Kennan Institute is the independent nonprofit entity set up to continue the mission and honor the legacy of the Kennan Institute that was part of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars (1974-2025). The Kennan Institute's mission is to advance scholarly and public understanding of Russia, Ukraine, and the broader region historically encompassed by the former Soviet Union, through rigorous research, open dialogue, informed public engagement and the capacity to serve as a liaison point between the worlds of academia and policy formation. Honoring the legacy of George F. Kennan, the Institute supports independent scholarship, cultivates a community of experts and practitioners, and fosters enduring connections between the United States and societies in the region.
