Mission

29 PIECES USES ART TO AWAKEN, UPLIFT AND GIVE VOICE TO THE CREATIVE HUMAN SPIRIT TO MAKE GENUINE, POSITIVE SOCIAL CHANGE.

About

In 2018, 29 Pieces made great strides in all three of our major strategic priorities for accomplishing our mission of giving voice to the creative human spirit to make genuine, positive social change. We expanded our arts education curriculum, bringing its repertoire of original lessons to a total of 20; began our second major public sculpture, PIECE 10; and embarked on a major civic art campaign. 29 PIECES EDUCATION Education We continued offering teacher trainings in our arts education curriculum, Artists Making a Kinder World and developed two new lessons, bringing our repertoire of original lessons to a total of 20. HOPE lesson: We developed and piloted a new HOPE lesson based on the work of Dr. Valerie Maholmes. The lesson leads students through four steps students can practice to cultivate resilience and hope as they work toward attaining their life vision. Students then apply what they have learned in creating a postcard to their future selves, imagining themselves speaking from the place of attaining their personal hopes. Dreamcatchers lesson: We developed and piloted a new DREAMCATCHERS lesson, inspired by the Native American tradition of dreamcatchers. Participants learn the Native American context and dream a good dream for another. They then create dreamcatchers using hoops, beads, fiber, paper and/or other found items from nature to give to beneficiaries of their dreams. Teacher trainings: 29 Pieces continued offering professional development workshops for teachers, training 50 Grand Prairie ISD teachers and 30 counselors in our LOVE lesson. These teachers then facilitated our lesson among 3,000 students in creating LOVE art and exhibiting art in the Grand Prairie community, supported by a grant from the Southern Poverty Law Center. Civic Art Campaigns 29 Pieces, in partnership with UNT-Dallas and Ashoka International, embarked on a major city-wide art campaign, Dallas Teachers Speak and a companion campaign, Dallas Students Speak. Dallas Teachers Speak: 29 Pieces planned, raised funds, and produced composite portraits of 159 of Dallas ISDs top teachers, combining their photos with text of teachers answers to questions: WHY DO I TEACH? and WHAT DO I NEED? In Summer 2018, we convened a steering committee of 27 lead teachers, treating them to a catered dinner, for a listening session so that we proceeded from a place of sensitivity, effective strategy, and knowledge. These teachers helped us to recruit 132 additional teachers for the project. We trained a team of 6 artists in makeup and portraiture photography and went to all schools to photograph each teacher in late Fall 2018. The purpose of the campaign was to celebrate and uplift public educators by highlighting their inner strength in addition to what they need to perform at peak capacity. (The campaign was mounted in venues across Dallas as well as the State Capitol in Austin in Spring 2019.) Dallas Students Speak: As a companion to Dallas Teachers Speak, we planned and raised funds from the Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs to conduct the Dallas Students Speak campaign. We hired and worked with local Dallas artist, Riley Holloway to conduct workshops with students at two local public high schools, E. J. Conrad and Irma Rangel Young Womens Leadership High Schools. (The campaign launched alongside Dallas Teachers Speak by exhibiting student art in public venues in Spring 2019.) Grand Prairie Love Project: 29 Pieces supported Grand Prairie ISD teachers in mounting a LOVE Project in their community by providing training, graphic art for publicity and signage, and ongoing consultation.
