Nutrition program: DSCC's and KSC's nutrition programs include both home delivered meals ('meals on wheels') and community dining. Home delivered meals ('meals on wheels') are packed and delivered each weekday to frail and homebound seniors. In addition to a meal, community dining sites provide opportunities for elderly persons to socialize and participate in activities. All meals served are balanced, nutritious, and meet special dietary needs required, such as low sodium, vegetarian, or diabetic. Each meal is equivalent to 1/3 of the reference dietary intake for adults 60 and over. DSCC also provides health and wellness education on topics pertinent to elderly lifestyles. Last year, DSCC served approximately 6,560 seniors through 381,780 meals. Federal and state grants consist of Older Americans Act (received through the Northeastern Illinois Area Agency on Aging) and Emergency Food & Shelter Program (received through the United Way).
