About
Surplus food is collected and redistributed through a network of charitable agencies, primarily food pantries at churches, community centers, etc. A total of 17,087,526 meals were distributed during the fiscal year. Food is also distributed through a variety of programs, including mobile food pantries, where food is given to people in need directly off foodbank vehicles in various locations throughout its 23-county service area in eastern Iowa and western Illinois. There were 1,705,033 meals distributed from 229 mobile pantries this year. The backpack program targets chronically malnourished children who received free or reduced lunches at school during the week, but do not have food to eat over the weekend; an average of 2,822 children received 6 meals for 35 weeks for a total of 592,632 meals. The organization also acquired its longtime partner, St. Stephen's in Dubuque, Iowa, which now serves as a second distribution center.
