FRIENDS TOGETHER SUPPORTS RESIDENTS OF NORTHEAST MICHIGAN WHO ARE LIVING WITH CANCER. OUR MISSION IS TO BE THE DIFFERENCE FOR OUR FRIENDS DURING AND AFTER THEIR CANCER EXPERIENCE. STRIVING TO BUILD PARTNERSHIPS WHILE PROVIDING PROGRAM AND SERVICES, FRIENDS TOGETHER ENCOURAGES PREVENTION, WELLNESS AND SUPPORT. OUR PRIMARY SERVICES INCLUDE SUPPORT GROUPS, DIRECT ASSISTANCE FOR MEDICAL TRAVEL, INFORMATION AND ADVOCACY.

THE DISTANCE AND COST OF TRAVEL TO MEDICAL APPOINTMENTS IS A BARRIER TO TREATMENT FOR MANY CANCER PATIENTS IN OUR RURAL SERVICE AREA. WE PROVIDED ASSISTANCE IN THE FORM OF FUEL GIFT CARDS TO OVER 475 LOCAL RESIDENTS. WE ALSO PROVIDED FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TO COVER THE COST OF 326 NIGHTS OF LODGING FOR 128 AREA FAMILIES. THE TOTAL CASH VALUE OF THESE TWO SERVICES WAS 66,517. WE CONTINUE TO OPERATE A VAN TO ASSIST CANCER PATIENTS IN OUR SERVICE AREA TRAVEL TO APPOINTMENTS AT OUR LOCAL CANCER CENTER. THIS YEAR 129 AREA RESIDENTS RODE IN OUR VAN, MOST FOR SEVERAL WEEKS AT A TIME. WE SPENT 11,166 IN OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE EXPENSES ON THIS VEHICLE. WE DROVE OVER 40,000 MILES TAKING PATIENT TO CANCER CARE. WE REALIZED MORE THAN 3,000 VISITS TO ONE OR MORE OF OUR EIGHT SUPPORT GROUPS ACTIVE IN THREE COUNTIES WITHIN OUR SERVICE AREA. OUR VOLUNTEERS VISITED AND ASSISTED 40 INDIVIDUAL CANCER PATIENTS AT OUR LOCAL CANCER CENTER. OUR THREE PERSON STAFF RESPONDED TO OVER 3,000 PHONE CALLS AND VISITS FROM OUR FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS STRUGGLING WITH CANCER. WE ASSISTED MANY OF OUR NEIGHBORS CONNECT WITH OTHER COMMUNITY RESOURCES TO RESOLVE THEIR IMMEDIATE NEEDS INCLUDING UTILITY PAYMENTS, HOUSING ISSUES, MEDICAL SUPPLIES AND ELDER CARE.
