MID-CONTINENT RAILWAY HISTORICAL SOCIETY--ALSO KNOWN AS MID-CONTINENT RAILWAY MUSEUM--IS AN OUTDOOR, LIVING MUSEUM AND OPERATING RAILROAD RECREATING THE SMALL TOWN/SHORT LINE WAY OF LIFE DURING THE GOLDEN AGE OF RAILROADING, SPANNING THE YEARS 1880-1916, WITH OPERATING TRAINS, EDUCATIONAL EXHIBITS, AND DISPLAYS OF RESTORED ROLLING STOCK. THE PURPOSE IS TO MAINTAIN AND OPERATE A MUSEUM AND HISTORICAL ORGANIATION PERPETUATING THE MEMORY AND HISTORY OF RAILROADING, INCLUDING THE PEOPLE, EQUIPMENT & GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATIONS THEREIN INVOLVED, AND TO ENGAGE IN, ASSIST AND ENDOW SUCH LITERARY & EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES AND UNDERTAKINGS AS WILL AID AND ABET IN PRESERVING SAID MEMORY AND HISTORY.

IN 2018-2019, THE SOCIETY CONTINUED ITS PROGRAM SERVICES BY OFFERING EDUCATIONAL DEMONSTRATION RIDES FOR MUSUEM VISITORS IN ITS VINTAGE RAILROAD EQUIPMENT, OFFERING SPECIAL EVENTS CENTERED ON HISTORIC AND SEASONAL THEMES, HOSTING GUIDED TOURS OF RESTORED RAILCARS AND OPEN HOUSES SHOWCASING ONGOING RESTORATION PROJECTS, PROVIDING OPPORTUNITIES TO LEARN HISTORIC RAILROAD OPERATING AND MAINTENANCE PRACTICES THROUGH ITS VOLUNTEER TRAINING PROGRAMS, ENTERTAINING REQUESTS FOR PRESENTATIONS TO AREA COMMUNITY CLUBS AND SCHOOLS, AND THE PUBLISHING OF ITS MEMBERS' MAGAZINE, NEWSLETTER, AND ANNUAL CALENDAR. MAJOR DEVELOPMENTS IN 2018-2019 INCLUDED THE ADDITION OF A HISTORIC DIESEL LOCOMOTIVE AND THE OPENING OF A NEW 10,500 SQ FT DISPLAY BUILDING, MAKING MID-CONTINENT HOME TO THE NATIONS LARGEST COLLECTION OF WOODEN RAILCARS TO BE STORED INDOORS. DIRECTOR AND MEMBER MEETINGS ARE HELD REGULARLY. THE SOCIETY CONTINUES TO HOST A DIGITAL COLLECTION OF PHOTOS, MUSEUM PUBLICATIONS, AND MANUSCRIPTS ON ITS WEBSITE WITH EXTENSIVE RESEARCH BY A LOCAL HISTORIAN ON RAILROAD CAR CONSTRUCTION. FURTHER COMMUNITY OUTREACH IN THE FORM OF THE USE OF SOCIAL MEDIA TO SHARE INFORMATION AND MEDIA PERTAINING TO THE SOCIETY'S COLLECTION AND RESTORATION EFFORTS, INFORM THE PUBLIC OF MUSEUM EVENTS, AND ALLOW THE PUBLIC AN EASY FORUM IN WHICH TO ASK QUESTIONS ON RAIL HISTORY AND THE SOCIETY'S EFFORTS.
