TO ACCOMPLISH THE MISSION, THE ORGANIZATION RUNS A MUSEUM THAT PRODUCES EXHIBITS, ON-SITE PROGRAMS, OFF-SITE PROGRAMS, AND HOUSES A COLLECTION.EXHIBITS: THE MUSEUM'S FACILITY FEATURES TWO EXHIBIT GALLERIES. THE PERMANENT EXHIBIT, "ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES", EXPLORES OVER 200 YEARS OF IOWA'S AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY. THE GALE SAYERS CHANGING EXHIBIT GALLERY HOSTS A NEW EXHIBIT EACH YEAR ON A DIFFERENT THEME. SEVERAL TRAVELING EXHIBITS ARE ALSO MADE AVAILABLE TO ORGANIZATIONS, BUSINESSES, LIBRARIES, AND OTHER MUSEUMS. OVER 4,700 PEOPLE VISITED THE MUSEUM'S ON-SITE EXHIBITS IN 2018, IN ADDITION TO OVER 3,000 WHO ATTENDED AN ON- OR OFF-SITE PROGRAM. OVER 39,000 ESTIMATED PEOPLE VISITED OUR TRAVELING EXHIBITS OFF-SITE.ON-SITE PROGRAMS: THE MUSEUM CONDUCTS NUMEROUS ON-SITE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS FOR YOUTH AND ADULTS. THIS INCLUDES GUIDED TOURS, HANDS-ON WORKSHOPS, LECTURES, AND PERFORMANCES. OVER 5,500 VISITORS BENEFITTED FROM ON-SITE PROGRAMS IN 2018.OFF-SITE PROGRAMS: THE MUSEUM OFFERS A VARIETY OF OFF-SITE PROGRAMS AND RESOURCES ACROSS THE STATE OF IOWA INCLUDING LEARNING SAFARIS (PRESCHOOL LIBRARY SERIES), TRAVELING EXHIBITS, TRAVELING TRUNKS, LECTURES, AND HANDS-ON WORKSHOPS. APPROXIMATELY 2,300 VISITORS BENEFITTED FROM OFF-SITE PROGRAMS IN 2018, IN ADDITION TO OVER 39,000 WHO VIEWED OUR TRAVELING EXHIBITS.COLLECTIONS: THE MUSEUM MAINTAINS A COLLECTION OF APPROXIMATELY 10,000 OBJECTS INCLUDING 100 LINEAR FEET OF ARCHIVAL MATERIAL, AND DOZENS OF ORAL HISTORIES. IN ADDITION TO PRESERVING THESE ITEMS FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS, THEY ARE UTILIZED IN EXHIBITS AND PROGRAMS. THE MUSEUM ALSO HAS A NON-CIRCULATING RESEARCH LIBRARY ON-SITE AVAILABLE TO VISITORS DURING REGULAR OPEN HOURS.
