About

Women's Empowerment Program:Local: Strengthened presence and nurtured partnerships at the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) and in the Greater San Antonio community with a total of 61 presentations and events providing approximately 4,168 people with opportunities to learn about WGCs mission and programs. Event displays and interactions at the University of the Incarnate Word included the 15th annual Red Dress Health Fair, Roshnic Fashion Show, Peace Month, International Fair and Bazaar, Internship Fair, the Festival of Colors, Incarnate Words Tricentennial festival, and Womens History Month. Some of the community presentations and partnerships include Universal City United Methodist Church, Young Women's Leadership Academy, Raindrop Turkish House, St. Anthony Catholic School, Central Park Lions Club, KSAT TV, and KLRN. WGC presented at the Women: Leadership, Compassion, and Justice Panel. WGC promoted female debate programs in SAISD with San Antonio Councilwoman, Shirley Gonzales at the Young Women's Leadership Academy (YWLA). WGC presented during a parallel event at the Commission for the Status of Women (CSW) Conference. For Womens History Month, together with the women at Raindrop Turkish House, Womens Global Connection led a conversation promoting the learning and leadership capacity of girls locally and around the world. Continued partnership with a local high school to develop understanding of another culture and complete student fundraising for a third rainwater harvester for the Bukoba Womens Empowerment Association (BUWEA) in Bukoba, Tanzania.Held 6th Annual Girls Global Summit as part of the Future Leadership San Antonio program with 275 attendees including presentations by nearly 40 girls from 14 area middle and high schools, and from the local community. This program specifically promotes leadership education for girls and global citizenship. Eight high school interns and one UIW intern provided year-long peer mentoring for the student girl groups who made presentations at the Summit. Social media reached 5,286 people during the event. Four scholarships and grants totaling $5,600.00 supported immersion trip volunteers to Peru. Emergency Microloan Fund There were 17 new loans totaling $3,570 this year, 4 loans were fulfilled, and 27 loans were still active at the end of the year.Planned and executed 3 immersion trips with 7 volunteers traveling to Peru and 7 to Tanzania. Global: Partner Womens Groups in Tanzania and Kenya built a total of 15 new rainwater harvesters by year end with funding from donations to WGC Lieveld Clean Water Program. That brings the number of WGC-funded clean water tanks in those communities to 52, serving 9,800 people. The rain harvesters are providing clean water for thousands of villagers. They provided WASH (water access and sanitation hygiene) training to villagers and others. With training from WGC and their own leadership, BUWEA continued to grow their microloan, soy, nutrition, and womens business programs. Previous donations for BUWEA technology initiatives funded computer equipment, training, and other equipment for the women.WGC contributed to the Women in Water and Natural Resource Conservation (WWANC) group in Kakamegas success by giving 2,000 pupils access to safe water and better sanitation services; 500 grassroots women have been trained in entrepreneurship, and 20 households were served during the year's anti jigger campaign. In 2018 with support from WGC, WWANC organized training on poultry farming and bought upgraded chicken species for 2 women groups. Consequently plans were made to purchase a sewing machine that interested groups could use to make re-usable sanitary towels for income generation. WWANC is also in partnership with a local womens organization in Siaya, Pendeza Weaving organization that trains women on weaving body warmers. The Kisembe women group ventured into goat rearing, they have 5 goats and plan to sell them and buy a dairy cow for milk production.During the summer trips to Tanzania and Kenya, WGC and its partners collaborated on the initiation of a bicycle safety program and expansion of bicycles provided to women by WGC fundraising.Hekima Girls Secondary School Immersion trip team led 4 workshops for 528 students and teachers at the Hekima Secondary School near Bukoba to further cultivate relationships and teach business skills. Pushaq Warmi members in Peru conducted 152 empowerment trainings for women in and near Chimbote, Peru about self-esteem, family violence, health issues, and other topics. The Pushaq Warmi women continued to share information and resources at special events and in social justice groups. Immersion trip volunteers visited the hospice clinic to evaluate the patients and educate them in regards to their nutritional needs. WGC also sent 100 water filtration systems to Peru to initiate a series of training workshops to both pre-school teachers and families. The water filtration systems are part of the Proyecto Agua Cristalina initiative of WGC in which teachers and families receive instruction on how to set up and maintain a water filtration system that produces safe, potable water with the goals of enhanced family health and the increase of school attendance.In the years immersion trips to Peru and Tanzania, the total of 14 volunteers provided 32 educational workshops and trainings which directly impacted 1,972 individuals and indirectly 8,340 in-country individuals. Fundraising: Annual Gala fundraiser in honor of WGCs 17th year had 300 attendees and $47,930.29 in net proceeds.Generated Global Strategic Partner donations and community involvement in WGC through friend raising gatherings and personal contacts.Participated in the fifth San Antonio Big Give online giving program. The PR/Development Committee raised $4,312.46 (including a $1500 prize from Big Give) from 35 donors. Received follow-up grant funding to continue training and assistance for all WGC programs in Tanzania and Kenya.Donated Services (In-Kind) received for 2018 amounted to $87,850
