Mission

International Literacy and Development promotes human flourishing among language communities that are under- resourced through literacy and economic development.

About

In 2019, ILAD conducted activities in 14 countries. ILAD has programs operating in literacy and development in 5 countries and is involved in language research and market analysis in 9 other countries. Program design and implementation will begin once thorough research is completed. ILAD's most extensive operations are in West Africa, where ILAD staff are involved in literacy, agricultural training, social business, micro-finance, medical initiatives, and education.Literacy: In 2019, 74 people graduated from literacy classes bringing the total number of graduates since 2011 to 310. ILAD also has 9 mobile libraries that serve 450 minority language speakers across two countries. 3 Mother-tongue schools also use the literature provided by these libraries. Agricultural training: Over 1,300 local farmers have adopted the innovative organic pineapple production methods being taught on ILAD's self-sustaining demonstration farm. Multiple, village-based small-farm co-ops are trained and in operation. The agriculture project has expanded to include teaching pond culture tilapia raising, animal husbandry and crop diversification.Social business: ILAD is supporting the creation of local businesses to provide fair market prices for agricultural products. These businesses generated over 50 full-time jobs for local people.Microfinance: ILAD offers financial services such as savings and micro loans through a rural agricultural development program. 517 people are in the savings plan and 55 new loans were given in 2019, resulting in a substantial increase in income for the participants.Medical initiatives: Working in partnership with local medical teams, ILAD holds mobile medical clinics several times a year in rural villages. Since 2015, approximately 1,400 patients have benefitted from medical services. Education: ILAD assists students by providing necessary school supplies. In 2019, approximately 1,850 rural schoolchildren were helped.Clean Water initiatives: In 2018, a new well was drilled for a community of 100 families. In a different West African location, development of a cashew demonstration farm and processing facility continues to move forward. Though this project is not currently serving the community on a broad scale, the research and project design is providing a sustainable framework for future engagement with the farmers in the area.In the Middle East, ILAD staff are focused on literacy and life-skills education among an overlooked, underserved minority language group. Literacy: Literacy classes have been offered in both the country's main language and the minority language. The first women's literacy class was completed in 2018.Medical Initiatives: 75 people were treated at a mobile clinic.Education: 12 women attended SHINE program, which teaches strength, value and purpose to women. This is important because in this culture, women are not valued.Micro-enterprise: With the guidance of the ILAD team, two women involved in the SHINE program created and developed a jewelry making micro-enterprise. This enterprise is gaining customers and providing a small income for the families of the women involved.Dallas, Texas, is now home to a large refugee population, many of whom speak minority languages with no access to written or audio texts in their primary language. In 2019, ILAD conducted extensive research to determine the most acute felt needs of this specific community and determined what gaps exist in services currently being administered. At the conclusion of the research, ILAD developed an English language literacy and exchange program to help facilitate English language acquisition and cultural assimilation.Central Asia: In 2019, the beginning foundation has been laid for a Business Development Center which will serve under-resourced language communities.A partnership was established for the creation of health education videos for non-literate, under-resourced language communities that struggle with communicable diseases and hygiene practices.ILAD also began in a Human Language Technology pilot program partnership with a public university. ILAD will be making a formal grant to the university to further the necessary research, and ILAD is presently collecting data from four language groups to use in the program with the goal of providing access to information to these language communities through machine translation. In Asia, North Africa, Southeast Asia and the Arabian Peninsula ILAD staff are in various stages of language and culture research, market analysis, and project development.
