Mission

THE INSTITUTE FOR ECONOMICS AND PEACE (IEP) IS AN INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE DEDICATED TO BUILDING A GREATER UNDERSTANDING OF THE INTER-RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN BUSINESS, PEACE AND ECONOMICS, WITH A PARTICULAR EMPHASIS ON THE ECONOMIC BENEFITS OF PEACE.

About

IEP USA has had a successful year, building the profile of the organization and expanding programs, including:Mexico ProgramIn April 2019, we released the annual Mexico Peace Index report by holding a major launch and press conference for 65 attendees and 30 journalists from 27 different media platforms. The Mexico Peace Index was covered in more than 570 distinct articles and radio pieces, and IEP gave 47 media interviews on the findings. RotaryWe were pleased to expand our strategic partnership with Rotary International in 2019, signing an MOU in the summer of 2019 to continue our partnership for the next three years. The partnership aims to bring IEPs research and tools to 1.2 million Rotarians worldwide, with a focus on training and community-based education. We improved the content and branding of the Rotary Positive Peace Academy, a free virtual course for Rotarians, which continues to be actively marketed throughout Rotarys global network. IEP and Rotary worked closely together to undertake two large-scale Positive Peace workshops for young leaders in Mexico and Colombia, both of which were very successful. These workshops are funded by sponsor Rotary districts and clubs and matched Rotary Foundation grants, and aim to teach young people about Positive Peace and to support them to lead projects in their own communities with the knowledge gained. We are also in the process of launching a new Positive Peace Activators program, which is a train-the-trainer structure to build regional networks of trained facilitators to help deliver the content of these workshops moving forward. The strategic partnership and IEPs peace research are promoted extensively through Rotary events, including at the Club and District levels around the world; we are also looking forward to presenting at the Rotary Peace Conference in California in January 2020.Positive PeaceAs with previous years, a major program output of IEPs research on Positive Peace is an annual Positive Peace Conference, which we hold in the fall at Stanford University. We again partnered with Stanford Center on Latin American Studies and established a new partnership with MercyCorps. We were pleased by the attendance of nearly 125 civic leaders, practitioners, community members, students and Rotarians; speakers hailed from academia, the private sector, the development field, local and international NGOs and beyond. Global Peace Index The 13th edition of the Global Peace Index was released in June 2019, with major events at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C. and Bard College in New York City. Global Terrorism IndexWe held a public launch in December 2018 at the United States Institute of Peace to mark the release of the 6th Global Terrorism Index. The launch included a robust panel discussion and lively engagement from the audience. Ambassadors/Training We are growing our network of trained IEP Ambassadors, with nearly 600 Ambassadors in the 2019 cohort alone. These join our network of 400 IEP Ambassador alumni, which together collectively represent nearly 100 countries. We continued our successful partnerships with Rotary and One Young World, and brought on several new and smaller partners including Youth Assembly and International Young Leaders Assembly. Ambassadors are trained through an ever-increasing series of webinars and are supported to deliver presentations and engagement activities around our research. Due to the tremendous growth and success of this program, in August 2019 we shifted the IEP Ambassador program to our central office in Sydney, Australia; the New York office will continue to support and promote the program through our key institutional partners. OutreachOur offices maintain an active public speaking and event calendar to support the dissemination of this work, with the US and Mexico offices speaking at several events a month on average. The employees in the New York office frequently travel to speaking events around the United States (and to a lesser extent, Canada), and are regularly in Washington, D.C. Our Mexico director travels extensively, including to share our findings with government officials, researchers, civil society leaders and young people around the country.
