Mission

THE BROOKLYN INSTITUTE FOR SOCIAL RESEARCH is an interdisciplinary teaching and research institute that offers critical, community-based education in the humanities and social sciences. Working in partnership with local businesses and cultural organizations, we integrate rigorous but accessible scholarly study with the everyday lives of working adults and re-imagine scholarship for the 21st century.

About

In 2019, BISR ran 80 courses in New York, 2 in Philadelphia and 5 in our Network program, including our first ever course in Puerto Rico. Across courses, we taught 1,499 students and offered over 150 scholarships. We ran our first courses in Islamic Studies and Forensic Architecture. In August we hired a full-time Operations Manager, increasing our administrative team. We started an event series entitled Occasional Evenings, which consist of film screenings, live performances, and readings that are accompanied by a panel discussion amongst our faculty and various guests. We began our partnership with Film Forum, where BISR faculty leads post-screening QA sessions with the director of the film. We collaborated with New York Review of Books for a panel discussion about the new publication of Walter Benjamins The Storyteller, presented at the American Folk Art Museum.
