Dollar For is a national nonprofit that crushes hospital bills by making hospital financial assistance known, easy, and fair. For the 188 million Americans barely making ends meet, even one hospital bill can trigger a financial crisis—and this burden falls hardest on Black, Latino, and rural communities. Hospitals are legally required to forgive or discount bills for low-income patients, but the system is broken: hospitals fail to distribute $14 billion in available help each year, and only 29% of eligible patients receive the relief they’re owed. Dollar For fixes this by combining outreach, bilingual screening tools, and personalized advocacy to help patients access the assistance they deserve—for free. We’ve already eliminated over $100 million in hospital bills, and our model turns every $1 donated into $20 in debt relief. We are working to scale our system to erase $1 billion in debt by 2028, while using data and patient stories to drive lasting policy change that makes hospitals—not patients—responsible for financial assistance.
