About
Leap to Success provides enrichment and employment readiness education that includes empowerment and leadership programs for women who are recovering from domestic violence, homelessness, addiction and other challenges, throughout multiple locations in San Diego County. During 2019, 743 women were served directly by Leap to Success programs, plus an additional 303 support staff from social service agencies attended presentations. All programs were offered at no cost to women who were referred by 63 agencies including Center for Community Solutions, Father Joes Villages, Goodwill Industries, Jewish Family Service, Interfaith Community Services, and San Diego Housing Commission.Our programs, accomplishments and activities included:1. Leap to Confidence, a seven-week classroom based personal leadership program, empowered 219 women who participated throughout four separate locations in San Diego County. Many program attendees came from homeless and domestic violence shelters. The women gained confidence and improved their sense of self-worth, self-esteem, and communication skills to ultimately help them re-enter the workforce and become self-sufficient.Local employers shared their expertise in every Leap to Confidence program. Hiring managers gave students the opportunity to hear about employment needs and how to be a candidate who gets hired. We had a diverse representation of both public and private sector organizations. Some of the employers included Ace Parking, County of San Diego, Hunter Industries, UC San Diego, and Goodwill Industries. Representatives from San Diego Continuing Education, MiraCosta College, and Vista Adult School gave information about low cost and free programs to update knowledge and skills to be employable in new and growing fields.a. Post program results showed that 78% of the women were hired within 60 days of graduating and 49% had enrolled in educational programs. Graduates reported the largest areas of growth being in their self-esteem, knowledge of employment opportunities, stress management, and optimism towards the future.b. Via survey, 70 staff members from community partner organizations gave feedback on the impact Leap to Confidence had on their clients. 100% said the program helps women build confidence to move forward from adversity very well to extremely well78% said they noticed higher self-esteem in their clients75% said they noticed a greater sense of optimism in their clients61% said their clients were more motivated to seek employment c. Continuing to build their leadership skills, more than 20 graduates volunteered as classroom assistants and public speakers. This involved assisting new participants and sharing their personal stories of overcoming adversity to inspire hope in the new classes. Graduates also spoke at community partner agencies with Leap to Success staff to provide their personal testimonials and help recruit program participants.2. The monthly Empowerment Circle program, available to all Leap to Confidence graduates, was offered in several locations. 71 women attended throughout the year. Many of them attended multiple sessions. This community building program supports women with tools and resources to continue their personal growth and healing.3. A one day retreat called Day of Renewal introduced mindfulness to our graduates. This was the 3rd annual event led by Diana Shimkus of the Encinitas Mindfulness Community. It was attended by 25 participants, staff, and volunteers.4. 13 women were selected for the year-long Transformation Leadership program. Each woman demonstrates her public speaking and leadership skills through the intensive programs various assignments and activities. 5. More than 700 people, including potential program participants and staff from community partner agencies, attended outreach programs including an introductory program called Shift Your Mindset for Success and learned stress management techniques.6. Leap to Success conducted a survey of 260 women in business to gather data on the importance of confidence to business success. Data was published in a report titled Why Every Woman Needs Confidence. The report findings have informed our understanding of confidence for success personally and professionally. Data from the report has been shared in special workshops for women entrepreneurs and corporate professionals. It has also been made available on our website and to the media.
