THE INSTITUTE FOR LEARNING INNOVATION (INSTITUTE) IS AN OREGON NONPROFIT CORPORATION WHOSE PRIMARY PURPOSE IS TO INVESTIGATE AND SUPPORT THE PUBLIC'S FREE-CHOICE LEARNING, THE SELF-MOTIVATED LEARNING THAT FULFILLS PEOPLE'S NEEDS, INTERESTS, AND QUEST FOR PERSONAL FULFILLMENT. THE ORGANIZATION IS PARTICULARLY CONCERNED ABOUT SUPPORTING THE PUBLIC'S LIFELONG SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATH (STEM)-RELATED LEARNING. THE PRIMARY PROGRAM SERVICE ACTIVITY OF THE INSTITUTE DURING 2018 WAS THE INITIATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF MISSION-DRIVEN PROJECT WORK.(SEE SCHEDULE O FOR CONTINUTION)FUNDING SOURCES INCLUDED GRANTS FROM FEDERAL AGENCIES, SUCH AS THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION AND INSTITUTE FOR MUSEUM AND LIBRARY SERVICES AND CONTRACTS WITH NONPROFIT AND GOVERNMENT ORGANIZATIONS, SUCH AS THE VIRGINIA AIR & SPACE CENTER AND L.A. COUNTY MUSEUM OF ART. THE FOCUS OF THESE PROJECTS INCLUDED STUDYING HOW CHILDREN AND ADULTS LEARN SCIENCE OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL; PROVIDING SUPPORT FOR MUSEUMS, COMMUNITY-BASED ORGANIZATIONS, AND OTHER ENTITIES INTERESTED IN MEASURING THEIR SOCIETAL IMPACT; AND CONVENING EDUCATORS AND POLICYMAKERS TO EXPLORE THE FUTURE OF LEARNING AND EDUCATION IN THE UNITED STATES. APPROXIMATELY 83% OF STAFF TIME AND ORGANIZATIONAL RESOURCES WERE DEDICATED TO THESE MISSION-DRIVEN PROJECT ACTIVITIES. REMAINING STAFF RESOURCES WERE SPENT ON ADMINISTRATION AND FUNDRAISING.THESE PROJECTS EXEMPLIFY AND CONTRIBUTE TO THE INSTITUTE'S EXEMPT PURPOSES AND MISSION. THE INSTITUTE BELIEVES THAT THESE PROJECTS AND FUTURE WORK ARE VITAL TO ENSURING THAT INDIVIDUALS, COMMUNITIES, AND ORGANIZATIONS IN THE UNITED STATES ADAPT AND THRIVE IN A RAPIDLY CHANGING WORLD.
