Mission

SoHarlems mission is to support racial equity and the economic development of the Harlem community. Since SoHarlems inception, 40 artisans and creative entrepreneurs have participated and 16 have gone on to establish their own enterprises. SoHarlem has also served more than 30 members of the local community through its summer youth training programs and conducted 20 public programs to ensure that Harlems ethnic, cultural, and aesthetic traditions and practices remain vital during a time of social change and neighborhood transition. In keeping with historic Harlem traditions, SoHarlem organized a series of public programs with individuals and organizations at the forefront of articulating cultural, environmental, historical, literary and other pertinent issues. SoHarlem completed a 1,000 SQF mural on Amsterdam Avenue at West 126th Street in 2017 and other public art work in the District.

SoHarlem trained 26 of its neighbors in garment construction, and from that pool, eight were selected to become apprentices in The Designers' Studio to further develop their skills. To date 87 designers have been assisted in our Designers' Studio at least 20% have establshed their brand and clientel, since launching training institute 40 individuals from our community have been trained, 10 became apprentices of which 5 are working in alterations.
