About
In 2018, we continued to focus on accelerating social and environmental impact with project-driven, values-oriented, and transdisciplinary initiatives, largely targeting Los Angeles County. Our aim remains to create what we are describing as a state of ecolibrium where the Earth and its people are in balance, which Pope Francis describes as integral ecology. We continue to define our work in broadly educational terms, with our initiatives and events serving the fundamental purpose of educating for the common good. We continued to work vigorously with the range of diverse social justice and environmental organizations with which we have nurtured relations since our founding, and extending outreach further. These groups include NGO, academic, government, business, and faith-based organizations. We have continued our strong web-based presence (www.pandopopulus.com) as well as a regular social media presence over FaceBook and Twitter. We update our community via ROOTBALL, our newsletter, a few times throughout the year. And we continue to populate our YouTube channel with video we produce. 2018 special initiatives included: Magenta House: a project on water and power conservation and efficiency targeting faith communities and involving architecture and green construction building programs in LA City Council District 5, in collaboration with the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. This project continues into 2019. Pilgrimage to Pando: a contemplative journey to the site of the largest living thing on the planet and our namesake, the one-tree forest in south central Utah, Pando. More than 60 people made the 4-day pilgrimage, which focused on themes of cultural and spiritual diversity. City Blitz: peer-to-peer executive-level education for sustainability professionals in Los Angeles County, sharing best practices. The day-long event brought sustainability professionals together from seven different cities (LA, Pasadena, Carson, and others) and was held at Claremont, which was the focus of our case study. Junk Battle!: an initiative designed to get students and their professors from local institutions of higher ed focused on their own institutional waste, with specially-designed courses and cross-course seminars over a semester or quarter. Junk Battle brought together leading design schools from across the county, including from UCLA, ArtCenter, CalArts, and LA Trade Tech with support from Pasadena City College and USC, with a blowout finale event held at the LA Cleantech Incubator in downtown. Pandotopia Blitz: a multi-day event hosted on the Maryknoll Sisters campus in Monrovia targeting communities of religious women from across the country that are interested in re-imagining their locations in light of Pope Franciss challenge of integral ecology and inspired by the Pando at Maryknoll initiative that we are undertaking (see below). Produced in collaboration with Plante Moran. Supporting networks we nurtured included: CSO Strategic Taskforce: three Taskforce events were organized throughout the year, taking place at CalTech, the LA Cleantech Incubator, and at SpaceX/Boring Company, with keynote speakers, presentations on practical matters, group discussions, and tours (SpaceX/Boring). Pandotopia Network: a network for religious women and others who are interested in incarnating the call for integral ecology of Pope Francis. In addition, we launched Pando at Maryknoll in collaboration with the Maryknoll Sisters on their campus in Monrovia, CA. A multi-year initiative, the aim for Pando at Maryknoll is to become a residential research park for integral ecology, with residential and working space for education, demonstration, and acceleration of social impact initiatives. In 2018, we signed a Letter of Intent with the Maryknoll Sisters to allow us to begin work as the Managing Partners of this new collaborative initiative on their 7 acre campus. We launched the Pando Fellows initiative as a residential program on location, launched the beginning of building and landscape improvements needed to support our vision, and laid the foundations needed with teams and networks. The first educational initiative to be launched at the Pando at Maryknoll accelerator was Magenta House, above (continuing into 2019).
