Mission
The mission of Kansas Legal Services is to provide legal advice and/or representation to low-income, disabled, victims of domestic violence, homeless, veterans, senior citizens and other individuals with legal issues who are experiencing barriers to obtaining legal services in civil cases. Many people are unaware that in the U.S. there is no "right" to legal representation in civil cases. Nationally more than 50 percent of those who seek civil legal aid are turned away due to lack of funding. Kansas Legal Services attempts to give every low-income (under 150% of Federal Poverty Guidelines) at a minimum legal advice. We would welcome the opportunity to provide full representation to more individuals and families. Kansas Legal Services is also a vehicle for keeping many low-income people from falling permanently into the category of chronically poor. It serves as a conduit by which many low-income people successfully get back on their feet and become self-sustaining. Through our domestic violence programs, we are also able to assist many individuals and families escape the abuse they have been enduring. We also provide legal education to individuals, agencies, and groups. Kansas Legal Services also provides mediation and employment training services in some areas of the state.
