About

The GFA has been dedicated as a nonprofit organization supporting the development of the classical guitar community since its inception in 1973 at the National GuitarConvention sponsored by the American String Teachers Association (ASTA). It has, since the 1970's, published the quarterly journal Soundboard, annual scholarly journal, Soundboard Scholar, and quarterly youth oriented publication Prodigies; established a large archive of scores, books and manuscripts; hosted the annual GFA Convection and musical performance competitions including the prestigiousInternational Concert Artist Competition and International Youth Competitions; commissioned composers of classical guitar music; organized the annual GFA-sponsored competition winner's concert tour currently comprised of approximately 50 concerts around the United States; held multiple annual Regional Symposia(one day mini-conventions) in various locations; and stablished pre-college classical guitar programs in cities across the country. In 2017, GFA premiered two new programs, the International Ensemble Competition (IEC) and the GFA Guitar Summit camp for young guitarists.IEC: For several years, GFA has supported the work of guitar ensembles through the GFA Guitar Ensemble Showcase. Given the popularity of guitar ensemble, the quality of the art form, and through the urging of the guitar community, GFA is incorporating this international ensemble competition into the annual GFA convention to give aspiring guitar ensembles exposure to a more recognized place within the global guitar community. This competition will replace the Ensemble Showcase, which has been a popular event at the GFA Convention for several years. The IEC will consist of three categories, Eligibility for each division will be determined by the oldest member of the group. Competitors can enter the International Ensemble Youth Competition Junior Division, for ages 13 and below, the International Ensemble Youth Competition Senior Division, ages 14 - 19, and finally the International Ensemble Artist Competition with a minimum age of 18 for all competitors. The winners of the competition will perform a concert on the final day of the GFA Convention. GFA Guitar Summit camp: GFA hosted its first annual Guitar Summit at the 2017 Convention & Competition at California State University Fullerton in Fullerton, CA. GFA is excited to offer this week-long sleep-away Guitar Summit for aspiring young musicians. The camp will run for six days and five nights and will consist of small ensembles, special guest workshops, and repertoire classes with hands-on, personalized feedback and instruction from world-class staff and guest artists.
