  • Maintain and enhance gardens in san mateo central park: all volunteer activity provides weeding, pruning, and on-going maintenance of the rose garden in central park for the enjoyment and benefit of the local community. volunteer program includes a training program on rose maintenance which can also be applied to private residential gardens. over 24 volunteers actively participated with over 651 hours of service. additional rose garden activities include replacing rose bushes as needed at our expense and replacing and maintaining the irrigation system.maintain the kohl pumphouse gardens at central park including the fairy garden for the enjoyment of children. operates the kohl pumphouse greenhouse which propagates plants for sale to the community at reduced prices. the public is encouraged to learn about gardening and the use of native and water efficient plants in their gardens. all volunteer activity by over 34 volunteers with over 2,128 hours of service. Expenses $11,501.
  • Maintaining brick pathways to our butterfly & hummingbird garden adjacent to the rose garden in central park. memorial pathway bricks may be purchased with special engraved sentiments for the enjoyment of the sponsor and the local community. activities included financing and installing new brick pathway, etching of bricks and installation of the etched memorial bricks. 2 volunteers and 40 hours involved in the project. Expenses $840.
  • Kohl pumphouse renovation project - smas has begun the first of three anticipated improvement phases to update the appearance and usefulness of the kohl pumphouse. improvements will provide a larger capacity, and more useful space for the smas educational workshops on horticulture and water-wise gardening. the building may also be rented by the general public for special events and other educational seminars. phase 1 was completed this year which included new flooring, replacement window coverings, replacement kitchen doors, replacement office furniture and interior painting. the project was completed by 10 volunteers contributing more than 225 hours of time.
