Mission

International Eye Foundation is dedicated to helping people see! Since 1961 IEF has taken up the challenge in poor countries around the world, helping to restore sight and prevent blindness. IEF offers strong new strategic directions that focus on making eye clinics financially self sufficient. IEFs achievements include developing eye health services, training ophthalmologists and para-medicals, and fighting vitamin A deficiency, trachoma and river blindness. IEF is now strengthening the management, quality of service, and income generating activities so that eye clinics are less dependent on outside donors and government funds.

About

PUBLIC HEALTH INITIATIVES:1. USAID'S CHILD BLINDNESS PROGRAM (CBP) 2013-2018 AND 2018-2023: IEF BENEFITS FROM FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR MANAGING THE TECHNICAL PORTION OF USAID'S CBP WHICH ENABLES IEF TO FULFILL ITS MISSION OF PREVENTING BLINDNESS IN CHILDREN. FROM JUNE 2013 TO JUNE 2018, IEF WAS A SUB-CONTRACTOR TO THE "PROGRAM FOR GLOBAL RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT" (PGRD) WHICH AWARDED 53 GRANTS TO CHILD EYE HEALTH PROGRAMS IN 23 COUNTRIES, MOSTLY IN THE DEVELOPING WORLD, OVER THE FIVE YEARS. GRANTS WERE SUPPORTED BY USAID FUNDS WHICH WENT DIRECTLY FROM PGRD TO THE GRANTEES. NO FUNDS TO GRANTEES FLOWED THROUGH IEF'S BOOKS. INTEGRATIVE SCIENCES, LLC, (INTSCI) AND IEF SUBMITTED A NEW PROPOSAL TO USAID IN JANUARY 2018 TO MANAGE USAID'S CBP FROM 2018-2023 WITH IEF AGAIN AS A SUB-CONTRACTOR FOR TECHNICAL SUPPORT. IN AUGUST 2018 (FY 2019), INTSCI AND IEF WERE AWARDED THE CONTRACT 2018-2023 WHICH WILL BENEFIT IEF IN THE AMOUNT OF $949,053 OVER THE FIVE YEARS. IEF'S ACTIVITIES RELATED TO USAID'S CBP ARE GOVERNED BY US GOVERNMENT RULES AND REGULATIONS.2. ONCHOCERCIASIS CONTROL PROGRAM - CAMEROON: IEF PIONEERED THE ONCHOCERCIASIS (RIVER BLINDNESS) CONTROL PROGRAM/MECTIZAN DISTRIBUTION PROGRAM IN CAMEROON IN 1992. THE PROGRAM ADDRESSES ONCHOCERCIASIS AND HAS BEEN ROLLED INTO THE BROADER NEGLECTED TROPICAL DISEASE PROGRAMS. IN CALENDAR YEAR 2018, IEF TREATED 1,207,485 PERSONS WITH MECTIZAN IN TWO PROVINCES IN CAMEROON. FUNDING FOR THIS PROGRAM COMES FROM A SUB-AWARD FROM HELEN KELLER INTERNATIONAL'S (HKI) USAID SUBCONTRACT. FUNDS GO DIRECTLY FROM HKI/NEW YORK TO HKI/CAMEROON AND THEN TO IEF/CAMEROON AND DO NOT FLOW THROUGH IEF/HQ BOOKS. HKI'S CURRENT CONTRACT ENDED IN SEPTEMBER 2018. IEF IS TO RECEIVE A NEW SUB-AWARD FROM HKI UNDER A NEW USAID SUB-CONTRACT IN THE AUTUMN OF 2019. IEF RECEIVES DONATIONS OF MECTIZAN TABLETS ANNUALLY FROM MERCK AND COMPANY, INC. AND RECEIVED $3 MILLION WORTH OF MECTIZAN AS AN IN-KIND DONATION TO IEF/HQ IN EARLY 2019 FOR THE CALENDAR YEAR 2019 DISTRIBUTION BY IEF-CAMEROON IN THE VILLAGES FOR WHICH IEF IS RESPONSIBLE FOR DRUG DISTRIBUTION AND CONTROL. THE MECTIZAN TABLETS WERE SHIPPED DIRECTLY FROM MERCK TO CAMEROON. IEF IS GOVERNED BY THE RULES AND REGULATIONS OF THE USAID SUB-AWARD FROM HKI, MERCK AND COMPANY, INC.'S CLINICAL PROTOCOLS, AND GOVERNANCE BY THE CAMEROON MINISTRY OF HEALTH.
