Special Olympics DC provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities by giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympic athletes and the community.

Special Olympics DC provides year round training and athletic competition in 12 sports to 1,600 individuals with intellectual disabilities in the District of Columbia. More than 40 competitions are conducted annually in the district. Other programs include unified champion schools with engages schools and youth leaders to promote social inclusion and unified sports activities by bringing together students with disabilities and without disabilities together on and off the field. Special Olympics DC also provides young athletes program to promote sport and play for children with and without intellectual disabilities (ID), ages 2 to 7 years old. Young athletes introduces basic sport skills.
