THE AGENCY ENACTS ITS MISSION THROUGH SEVERAL KEY APPROACHES INCLUDING: PREVENTION SERVICES, EMERGENCY SHELTER & RAPID REHOUSING SERVICES, PERMANENT SUPPORTIVE, TRANSITIONAL, AND AFFORDABLE HOUSING PROGRAMS. (1) PREVENTION SERVICES - SHELTER HOUSE IS THE SOLE CONTRACT HOLDER WITH FAIRFAX COUNTY'S OFFICE TO PREVENT AND END HOMELESSNESS PROVIDING PREVENTION SERVICES TO FAMILIES IN HALF THE SERVICE REGIONS OF THE COUNTY. THROUGH CRISIS INTERVENTION AND SUPPORTIVE SERVICES, SHELTER HOUSE HELPS FAMILIES STABILIZE IN HOUSING AND AVOID HOMELESSNESS ALTOGETHER. (2) EMERGENCY SHELTER & RAPID REHOUSING SERVICES - SHELTER HOUSE OPERATES HALF OF THE FAMILY SHELTERS IN FAIRFAX COUNTY AS WELL AS THE COMMUNITY'S ONLY 24 HOUR EMERGENCY SHELTER SERVING VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, SEXUAL VIOLENCE, STALKING, AND HUMAN TRAFFICKING. THE AGENCY PROVIDES RAPID REHOUSING SERVICES AT EACH LOCATION, WHICH INCLUDES CASE MANAGEMENT, HOUSING LOCATION, AND RENTAL ASSISTANCE AS IT IS AVAILABLE TO HELP FAMILIES END THEIR HOMELESSNESS AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE AND RETURN TO PERMANENT HOUSING. (3) PERMANENT SUPPORTIVE, TRANSITIONAL, AND AFFORDABLE HOUSING PROGRAMS - SHELTER HOUSE PROVIDES PERMANENT SUPPORTIVE HOUSING TO FAMILIES WITH AN EXTENSIVE HISTORY OF HOMELESSNESS AND DOCUMENTED DISABILITIES THAT PROHIBIT THEIR ABILITY TO WORK AND LIVE INDEPENDENTLY. ITS TRANSITIONAL HOUSING PROGRAM PROVIDES SUPPORTIVE SERVICES AND HOUSING TO VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE. THE AFFORDABLE UNITS THAT THE AGENCY OPERATES CREATES THE OPPORTUNITY FOR HOMELESS FAMILIES AND VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, THAT MAY OTHERWISE HAVE A DIFFICULT TIME COMPETING IN THE HOUSING MARKET, TO END THEIR HOMELESSNESS. IN FISCAL YEAR 2017, SHELTER HOUSE SERVED 540 HOUSEHOLDS AND 1613 INDIVIDUALS. MORE THAN 70% OF THOSE EXITING SERVICES MOVED TO A PERMANENT HOUSING OPTION. SHELTER HOUSE WAS RECOGNIZED FOR ITS ACCOMPLISHMENTS BY THE NORTHERN VIRGINIA CHAMBER THROUGH ITS COMMERCE OUTSTANDING CORPORATE CITIZENSHIP AWARDS AS THE 2017 NON-PROFIT OF THE YEAR WINNER. THE AGENCY WAS ALSO RECOGNIZED AS A 2017 PUBLIC SERVICES INNOVATOR OF THE YEAR FINALIST THROUGH THE NORTHERN VIRGINIA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE GREATER WASHINGTON INNOVATION AWARDS.
