About
In 2018, Trust for Americas Health (TFAH) continued to advance its mission to promote optimal health for every person and community and make the prevention of illness and injury a national priority. As a nonprofit, nonpartisan public health policy, research, and advocacy organization, TFAH envisions a nation that values the health and well-being of all and where prevention and health equity are foundational to policymaking at all levels of society. Across the range of public health issues TFAH addressed, including obesity, substance misuse and suicide, public health emergency preparedness, health equity, prevention and public health policy, public health funding, chronic disease, and infectious disease, TFAH promoted public health policies that affect the entire nation, with an emphasis on how public health policies and programs can promote healthy individuals and communities regardless of geography.TFAH maintains and enhances its work with traditional and new partners on high-impact health issues. Throughout its efforts, TFAH is also committed to advancing health equity and addressing the social determinants of health which are the conditions in which people are born, grow, work, live, and age, including through collaborative, multisectoral approaches. TFAHs work is guided by values of equity, independence, evidence-based, trust, partnerships, innovation, and financial stewardship.TFAHs projects focused on advancing an evidence-based public health system that is ready to meet the challenges of the 21st century. TFAH successfully published evidence-based reports; developed and advanced effective policy recommendations and approaches; hosted policy convenings and learning collaboratives; spearheaded targeted initiatives and outreach; collaborated with partners at the national, state, and local levels; and produced educational resources.Among TFAHs accomplishments in 2018:TFAH launched the Age-Friendly Public Health Learning and Action Network in Florida, in partnership with the Florida Departments of Health and Elder Affairs and with support from The John A. Hartford Foundation. The Learning and Action Network aims to expand public healths role in improving the health and well-being of older adults. The Learning and Action Network includes teams representing 37 of Floridas 67 county health departments.TFAH planned and hosted a four-part national webinar series, Taking Action to Promote Health Equity Using the Lessons from Cutting-Edge Practices to Improve Health and Well Being. The series was supported by The California Endowment, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. It informed a broad national audience about compelling and replicable health equity initiatives, and each webinar was highly attended with participants from all 50 states and the District of Columbia. TFAH released its first-ever report on Promoting Health and Cost Control in States: How States Can Improve Community Health & Well-being Through Policy Change. The new report analyzed state action on 13 policies outside the healthcare sector that have a long-term impact on health and an evidence base showing their effectiveness. Economic and health outcomes evidence was examined to identify policies with both promising health outcomes and economic data. Furthermore, each policy was assessed for evidence of its impact on the reduction of health disparities and the promotion of health equity. In response to the growing need for a primary prevention strategy on substance misuse and suicide, TFAH formed and is leading the Well Being Working Group, a coalition of 25 organizations representing public health, substance misuse, mental health, suicide prevention, social services, and community-based organizations. The Working Group supports population-level strategies to prevent the initial onset of mental health and addiction challenges by improving the social, physical, and economic conditions in communities and by promoting greater attention to primary prevention and health equity. TFAH published and disseminated a series of reports and issue briefs, including:1.The State of Obesity 2018: Better Policies for a Healthier America: This 15th annual report by TFAH and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation summarized national and state level obesity trends and documented that states with high adult obesity rates are increasing and that there is an urgent need to increase evidence-based obesity prevention programs.2.A Funding Crisis for Public Health and Safety: State-by-State Public Health Funding and Key Health Facts, 2018: This report summarized public health funding at both the national and state level and key health facts in states and includes recommendations for ways in which public health funding needs to be increased.3.Pain in the Nation Update Brief on the Drug, Alcohol, and Suicide Crises: This issue brief examined the most recent data of drug overdose deaths, alcohol-related deaths, and suicides and concluded that such deaths had reached the highest level ever recorded. Furthermore, for a second year in a row, these deaths also increased at a record pace.
