Mission

For Love of Children (FLOC) provides educational services beyond the classroom to help students succeed from first grade through college and career. FLOC brings together students, volunteers, families, and community partners in proven programs that teach, empower, and transform. FLOC’s services are provided for free to students from low-income families in the District of Columbia and West Virginia. Our experience shows that when students are encouraged and prepared, they can overcome any challenges and complete their educations. In operation since 1965, FLOC has served more than 10,000 children and youth and has become one of the most respected nonprofits in the community. Today, roughly 25 staff and 300 volunteers serve nearly 600 students per year at FLOC’s facilities.

About

Scholars Program - The FLOC Scholars Program serves students in grades 6-12, and postsecondary students, helping them gain the skills needed to graduate from high school, pursue higher education, and succeed in college and career. The Scholars Program served a total of 110 middle and high school students in the 2017-2018 academic year. Our Postsecondary program is composed of 36 students, 67 percent of which are females and 33 percent males; 90 percent of our students are currently enrolled full-time (taking at least 12 credits); 5% are enrolled part-time (less than 12 credits) and 5 percent are not currently enrolled in a postsecondary institution due to financial hardship but have plans to re-enroll in the next academic year. In grade-based cohorts of 20, FLOC students receive academic and career guidance tailored to their grade level. Once a week for 2-hours, FLOC staff delivers workshops that cover a variety of topics and provide students with tools and techniques to aim successfully for college and vocational schools. During workshops, students have an opportunity to explore topics, such as leadership, self-identity, group identity, international cultures, high school preparation, all while exploring D.C.'s social, economic, and political climates. FLOC's network of partners continued to provide opportunities for youth to develop new relationships and explore the world around them. During the summer, Scholars have the opportunity to attend weekly camps at our Outdoor Educational Center in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. Exposure to the outdoors, learning survival skills, and disconnecting from all electronic devices, allows students to take risks and engage in activities that push them outside of their comfort zones. Middle, high school, and postsecondary programs are designed to ensure that students graduate from high school academically and emotionally prepared to attend and complete a postsecondary education. Throughout the program, scholars and their families are assisted throughout the rigorous college application and financial aid process. As students ramp up this process in their junior and senior years, they are guided through the nuts and bolts of choosing, applying to, and financing a higher education through: Visits to college and university campuses, college research, SAT preparation, college essay writing, and financial aid workshops. As students enter a postsecondary institution, the Scholars program continues to provide support and mentoring through regular check in's, distance learning seminars and professional development workshops during semester breaks. In order to quantify and assess non-cognitive growth and college readiness in our students, we administer an assessment survey in the fall and spring. FLOC's surveys are individualized for each grade cohort based on the outcomes and objectives listed in the CollegeEd College Planning Program Curriculum from College Board.
